New Huge Ship: Action VI Transport (recommendation)

By RustyCanuck, in X-Wing

I would like to both get the communities reaction to and recommend to FFG that they consider building the "Action VI Transport" for Epic gameplay.

I believe everyone agrees that size is the most important factor for Epic gameplay. From the research that I've done, most capital ships, especially imperials, are 200-300m in length and longer. It would be next to impossible to scale these down, even relatively to the Corvette & Med.Transport, without requiring a massive playing surface and throwing the balance of the 1/270 scale ships way off. Therefore, size/scale is my critical factor and I limited my search to capital ships that could be scaled to mount on the existing FFG huge ship bases and use the existing movement templates.

I believe that the Action VI fits nicely, relative scale wise, between the CR-90 & GR-75. At 125 metres in length it would be able to be scaled down, mounted to current bases and use the current movement templates.

Ship Length per Wookipedia:

CR-90 Corellian Corvette: 150m

Action VI Transport (aka "Bulk Transport"): 125m
GR-75 Medium Transport: 90m

My second factor was balance. I wanted a ship that could be used by the Imperials to allow them the same opportunity to conduct similar epic gameplay missions / scenarios.

*** For those who don't agree with the EU, just remember that no one is forcing you to buy/play with those pieces, but you can thank your veterans for retaining the freedom to make that choice. ***

Thirdly, I recognized that there is a need to promote the Lore of Star Wars, including the Expanded Universe (EU). This also includes the acceptance by FFG of the traditional Star Wars moral struggle of light vs dark best represented by rebel vs empire and jedi vs sith. This applies equally to how the game treats fringe characters such as smugglers and bounty hunters.

The Action VI would also allow the introduction of pirates into the X-Wing game. I don't want to squirrel off into a discussion about introducing other "factions", so I have aligned the pirates with the Empire for they are generally considered to be of the "dark side". However, they could be employed as a neutral / third element for some interesting mission variations / dynamic.

I believe that the Action VI could be a versatile piece that, as per the lore, may be used by either the Empire, Rebels or a third party.

Specific thoughts on the ship idea?

I think it would be a great addition, I was also looking at the sizes of imperial capital ships a while back and couldn't think of any decent additions. I guess this could be used by either faction.

It is one of the first EU (sorry...legends) ships that I read about and I really liked the characters on board and the idea of the ship. In my youth I managed to always read his name as Talon Karade, it was only recently that I realised how wrong I was!

It even comes with its own grab handle!!!

I think the Action VI would be an awesome addition to the game, and I do hope they build it!

Unfortunately I don't think it's in the Karrdes (sorry) anytime soon (but I hope I'm wrong). It's hard to think of it as being an Imperial transport, and an Imperial Huge has to be what they do next in the Huge category. I have no flippin' idea what they're going to come up with on that, because so many of the options have size issues.

But it looks like the offspring of a hand vac and a lunch box! No way I'd want to get shot in that

Funny story, Rob Caswell originally based the design off a pitcher in his house. He also said that after he made his original illustration, future Star Wars illustrators got the width of the ship completely wrong (it was supposed to be more pyramidal in its frontal profile).

Interesting.

But did they improve the look?

I think they did, though Rob would have preferred they keep his original intent:
