Shuttles, Defenders, and Phantoms. Oh my!

By bubblepopmei, in X-Wing

I picked up my Wave 4 last night and I've been drumming up ideas. A boy bought me the shuttle and I want to make use of it, so what do you think about the following?

Colonel Jendon

ST-321

Colonel Vessery

Echo

Adv. Cloaking Device

Veteran Instincts

Gosh it is getting hard to build at 100pts.

My idea is to have Jendon feed Echo who feeds Vessery.

As far as 3 ship Imperial builds go, this seems less squishy, but are they viable at all?

Thoughts, my lovelies?

If you plan on passing target locks from Jendon to Echo, then you are flying Echo completely wrong. Echo does not want to be tied at range one to any ship. The whole point of Echo is to dance around the table avoiding arcs. If you want to feed Vessery, how about Omicron Group Pilot w/ ST-321, and Weapons Engineer? You have three ships who can fly independent of each other, while still benefitting each other.

Good idea!

I can even add Fire control systems to Echo then. Thanks!

This is the exact build that I have been playing around with.

Omicron Group Pilot + ST-321 + Weapons Engineer

Echo + VI + Adv. Cloaking Device

Colonel Vessery

That leaves 3 points to play around with since I want to get it to 100pts so that Echo can try to move last. Been playing around with what 3 points of upgrades works best on Vessery.

It certainly looks interesting. My only reservation with this list, is there is no Engine Upgrade on the shuttle. You say you have been playing with it? How does the shuttle fair without the engine upgrade? In my experience, shuttles NEED that extra mobility to be effective, unless it's a doom shuttle.

Yeah, soo many epic builds that had to start over just because of 100 p limit instead of 101 p limit =P

I don't see a reason to put 4 points in a ship that's purpose is to draw attention and support the vipers.

I put FCS on Echo with the extra points.

Hmm... Predator, Outmaneuver, Ion Cannon, Hull Upgrade, Stealth Device... unfortunately no way to combo cheaper options as the lowest cost Modifications, Missiles, and Cannons are all 3 points...

Edit: what about putting navigator on Echo with the 3 points? Even crazier maneuverability.

^This. I've been using it as a support ship, mostly just holding it back to fire off some shots. The Defender stays with him to keep him from being outmaneuvered too badly. So it's worked out fairly well. He's died 2 out of 3 times, but served his purpose while alive.

I originally put Predator on there, but with Vessery getting target locks it wasn't used all that often. An ion cannon to set up some shots for Echo would be interesting. Might give that a shot next.

I actually really like putting navigator on Echo, but was trying to stay away from dumping any more points in to him with this particular build.

Good point with Predator...

The problem with trying to fill 3 points (since we want to get to 100 points for initiative) on Vessery is that there really aren't very many options. The cheapest modification, missile, or cannon is 3 points, so if you use one of those it's all you get. Which also means you have to use a 3 point EPT if you want to spend all of the points on Vessery...

Alternatively:

Adrenaline Rush on Vessery

FCS on the Shuttle

I've come to the conclusion that the shuttle works effectively much like the doomshuttle, it serves a purpose but you really shouldn't get too hung up on losing it. So I'm wary of putting points into the one ship of the build that I'm perfectly happy with them killing off.

Yeah I think I may just try out ion cannon/hull upgrade on Vessery, or put Navigator on Echo.

Hmm, that's a fair point. I may end up trying this list out tonight!

2 things:

1.

Gosh it is getting hard to build at 100pts.

^this^

2. Regarding Initiative, if you have lower points, the rules now state that you get to choose whether you want it or not. So having lower points could mean garaunteeing that your opponent has initiative.

It is good fun!

I'm thinking I will run the ion cannon set up tonight to see how it does setting up Echo and the albino star cow. Usually I just held the shuttle pretty well back to take pot shots from range and let the Defender and Phantom do their thing, but I might play it a bit more aggressive tonight with Vessery ioning targets for it.

You might drop ST321 and have 6 points to play with. Give 4 to Vessery in the form of an Engine Upgrade. Put an FCS on Echo.

100 pts.

I used the build tonight with ST 321 on the Omicron and dumped the extra points into FCS for Echo. My first time using her and she snuck behind every ship. I love the Phantom.

Colonel Vessery was a blast. I think 80% of her moves were the white K turn. I never used up the shuttle's target locks so Vessery remained well fed.

The ST 321 title was important because I had no intention or ability to keep the cow in the fight. She got her shots in, blocked a few times, and then lured rebel scum away from the real threats in an obsessed effort to down even one of my ships.

This list gives me orgasms.

I'm definitely playing this game the wrong way.

I also played a double Colonel list yesterday. Jendon + Vessery. It was a excalation tournament, so I ended up with The two colonels + 3 bombers and it was just amazing the amount of brutality Vessery could level on the Rebel Scum, using Outmaneuver + Engine Upgrade boosts after white K-Turns and with Jendon supplying the TLs to top it all up.

The bombers didn't have too much ordonance, but they did carry some bombs or mines. Most importantly, though, they could soak up some TLs from Jendon before the first contact with the enemy, having basically locked down all the enemy before Vessery tore through their flanks.

Stay together and they got bombed to smitherens with Proximity and Seismic. Spread out and become easy pickings for Vessery.

Nerdgasm indeed

This is the most enjoyable squad I have played in X-Wing to date:

42 Vessary, PTL, Engine

37 Echo, VI, FCS, ACD

21 Omicron

Naked omicron? Yikes, no thanks. Without Vader or mobility upgrades, the space cow offers nothing but a meatshield. I would completely ignore it then get behind it for the last kill.

You have missed the point, the cow offers a lot for so little in a Vessary squad. You could roll a Scimitar/Gamma if you wanted though.

For 21 points you get a meat shield, blocker and bad ass Target Locker!

If it gets a Target Lock on my biggest threat and 6+ shots off then job done. Anything above that and it's a bonus.

Good point, I wasn't seeing that option.

I'm looking at this build, but its probably too squishy. If I can keep echo or rexler safe till end game, it should be in the bag. Echo vs anything but a turret is a win.

Omnicron + Vader

Rexler + Predator

Echo + IV + Advanced Cloaking Device

Well I ran my build with ion cannon on Vessery and really wasn't impressed with the ion cannon. The defender was great, and the team synergized well, but ion cannon was just meh. Used it twice to ion a Y-Wing off the board, but probs would have been better off just shooting it up.

Think I will go with upgrading Echo with either FCS or a Navigator. Wasn't trying to add any points to an already expensive ship, but I don't want to add anything to the albino space cow just to have it blown up, and I'm not entirely happy with any of the upgrades in Vessery's price range of 3 points outside of Outmaneuver. If I can I will try out each of those upgrades to see which ones I like.

Otherwise, the squad did really well against an elite PS XXY squad. Came down to Echo against Luke, and Luke never got close to getting a shot on him.

I think I'd still keep Col. Vessery naked of 2nd weapons. I want my darlings as toothsome as they are winsome. I considered an Ion canon on Vessery but I want her to eat the targets not play with her food.

Navigator on Echo is something I'm very curious about. I'll need to fly her more often. Always frustrating to lose a ship with so many upgrades, and I'm already running her with FCS, ACD, and VI.

I was wondering which of the Weapon's Engineer and ST-321 to drop from the Omicron, but I don't think I'd drop both. I suppose dropping thew Weapon's Engineer to afford the Navigator makes the most sense. Omicron can 1st turn target lock and let Vessery zoom ahead to take it on. I don't really *need* to have 2 target locks being managed unless its Col. Jendon.

Broak Vessery is male.

This is a reversal of the regular gender correction on this forum, so I'm a bit confused.
