My beef with the huge ships and the state of the game.

By BahnCalamari, in X-Wing

I love this game, but I have no interest in epic play. I have a full time job, a wife, a daughter and other commitments. Every once in a while I can get out for a tournament and I love it. I really love 100 point games.

When I bought a second shuttle (basically) for the AdvSens it did not bother me so much as I could potentially see myself running a list with two shuttles. If I ever wanted to competitively use those 4 pilots, 4 droids, 4 crew that come with the huge ships I need to shell out big bucks for some huge ships that I would literally never use as they are actually forbidden in the most popular format of this game.

I know that Fantasy Flight is a business and they made these decisions knowing young people with excess money would buy these ships up but this still bugs me to no end.

Epic is a fantastic format. It is fun to play, albeight time consuming. Find a friend who wants a second transport. Split it with him and get the cards. The Tantive cards are all unique. Somebody has to have doubles they will trade away.

Or buy the Epic ships and try the format. The Transport is immensely fun at 150 and 200 points. If you're playing in tournaments your venue will hold epic tournaments sometimes. It'll be a good time.

Similarly to you, I'm not in a position to invest in huge ships, unless sugar daddies buy them for me.

I don't worry about it because 1. I'm an Imperial girl and it seems most of the awesome cards are rebel crew 2. I don't think a single upgrade card will make or break my game play experience.

As you are an imp player, it is a valid point that 0 of the 12 standard playable cards are usable by imps.

But I am Rebel Scum.

I'm sorry but I'm not seeing the problem here?

Your upset because the huge ships are more expensive, or they wouldn't see much play on your side of things?

It not ffg responsibility to make make everything affordable for everyone.

"oh John doesn't make enough, better not make this or we will sell it cheaper for him "

Put 20 bucks aside a week.

Most people spend that on coffee a week alone.

If you want something but can't afford it, then sacrifices are made

Of you don't think you'll get much use out of it, then considered it as money saved.

Other people financial resources is not ffg responsibility

I think he's mad because both huge ships came with something small for standard play.

GR-75 came with the X-wing and four new unique pilots, new torpedoes.

CR-90 came with four unique new crew cards useable in standard play.

I think it's just business. Check ebay, IMO. I'm sure people are buying multiples of the huge ships and have extra cards to sell.

Skargoth has it right. It is a lot of money for very little that works in standard play.

And the point that I should consider it saved money is valid. I wont be buying those huge ships for those cards, it is just frustrating that they are not providing us another way to acquire them without investing in another format of the game.

Best. Post. Ever.

I see his point. I don't think is about the cost. It's about the fact that includes some nice upgrade cards you may want, but in a ship you'll never use. It seems silly to buy a huge ship and never use it.

I wanted two copies of advanced sensors, but didn't want to buy two shuttles. Not because I couldn't afford it, but because it doesn't make sense two but two of something I never plan on playing for two upgrade cards. Luckily we have the e-wing now.

Well there is your answer right there.

Just wait.

Chances are they may come out with another ship down the road

Uniques seem pretty exclusive. Hell, even Squad Leader only comes with the Tie Advanced.

Where are these young people you speak of?

I'm a broke college student barely keeping up with getting all the ships. (I still don't have the transport). I've only bought one of each, and any doubles I've won in tournaments or gotten as gifts.

All of the people at the tournaments are old guys with excess money who have 50 of each thing. :P

I got a wife and responsibilities.. But she understands. It's what I enjoy. Guess I'm a lucky guy

As someone else with a job, wife & kids I RARELY get to play epic format. But when I do...it's totally worth it.

The thing is here, you don't NEED those cards, you can get by without them, so why stress over it? I don't own either of the Huge ships, but I managed to win my local Regionals without them (Though to be fair, I did borrow R3-A2 from a friend with a transport). There's so many good cards out there, it's not necessary to have everything to be competitive.

I may never play epic, but That Tantive Mini looks fantastic on the bookshelf in my office next to my lego TIE Bomber.

Also remember that the huge ships can be used as stationary terrain, by replacing 3 of the standard asteroids. Just because they're not cruising around going PEWPEW and running over TIEs doesn't mean you can't get some table time out of them.

For that matter, you only "need" the huge ships if you want to use those cards/X-wings in an official tournament.

If you're playing at home with friends, print them out and have fun!

0/10 rant score

WTF? You could play a few large Epic games in the time span that is required to play a tournament. So it really just comes down to you don't like the large ships and just prefer tournament play. Well get over yourself, the players of this game stretch a wide gambit and not solely dedicated to tournament play. Feel free to buy or not buy and play as you please.

I will default to my usual counterpoint to these posts.

Wander over to Games Workshop and build a 1000 point army in your shopping cart.

Then blink your eyes a few times, close the browser window, and order a Corvette and a Transport for the upgrade cards.

Oh, and don't forget the $80 rulebook and the 5-6 hours on a Saturday you need for a good game.

Now you've gone and made poor Space Whale SAD.

WE LOVE YOU SPACE WHALE!

Putting cards that can be used in the normal game is just good marketing. It means people who were on the fence or even not really interested in them got them, for the cards if little else.

Considering what you get with the transport, getting it for $40 and thinking of it as a Rebel Aces with a bonus Transport isn't IMO a horrible way to go. The CR-90 doesn't have nearly as much in it that is useful for the 100 point game.

That has Han, Lelia, C3P0 and R2-D2, all of which are nice but none that I'd consider vital to a competitive list.

I get why someone might be less then thrilled with the Epic ships, and I can't blame them for wanting to rant, but I also don't think you'll get much sympathy.

So here is my counter argument. First, if you are only playing the game casually, just for fun with some beer and pretzels in your basement, then you do not NEED to buy ships for cards. I am sure your buddies will permit you to play without the cards.

HOWEVER, if you have any interest whatsoever in playing this game at a competitive level, then this is something you have had to do since wave 1. If you want that card you need to buy the ship that comes with it. Eventually, FFG does something cool like release Imperial Aces so you can get those cards you want, or the E-Wing now comes with Advanced Sensor.

In the end, buying ships for cards has been a part of this game since the beginning and I am OK with it. As stated elsewhere in this thread, in other miniatures games, the prices are MUCH higher. While I do wish FFG had added more Standard play cards to the CR-90, I bought one with joy in my heart and will buy another soon.

Bottom line, this is a hobby, hobbies are expensive, and the costs to play this game are dramatically less then to play others.
