Let's take a look at Jan Ors!

By MichielR, in X-Wing

Hello again X-wing fans!

This week I'm looking at Jan Ors on board the HWK-290!

I would also like to take this moment and thank you all for the amazing support in my first few video's - really appreciate it.

Here it is: http://youtu.be/djA8x-B0cYo

As always, thanks and feel free to subscribe if you want to see more!

I know an artist or two who I could ask..

I've been hearing this a lot and took note of it.. It's something I need to get used to, haha. Thanks!

A team that I liked to play is:

Jan Ors + Swarm Tactics + Ion Cannon turret + Recon Specialist (That will get switch to Kyle Crew once it hits)

Blue Squadron Pilot + Adv Sensor + HLC

"Dice" is the Plural, the singular is "a die"

...except, it is complicated.

"Die" is a frequently used word for the singular, something to be drilled into poor primary school children to memorise needlessly. Needlessly as the word "Dice" is in fact fully acceptable as both the plural and the singular noun, something you will see reflected in both dictionaries and game manuals alike. It is not even a recent modern erosion of grammar, as the use of the word dice in the singular sense can be traced all the way back to the Middle Ages (when, ironically "dyces" - with Michiel's plural s - was used as plural only, while "dyce" could be both singular and plural).

How come? Because the word dice also functions as a so-called non-count noun (such as grain, knowledge, advice and English) even if it is countable. And well, because languages are funny living things :D

It is - perhaps more so amongst gamers - potentially considered pendantic to use "die" and/or somewhat ignorant to use "dice" depending on audience, while neither of the nouns are actually more correct linguistically.

PS: Like your videos Michiel; subscribed a while back and have enjoyed the discussions there.

I actually think that squads like this are exactly where Decoy shines over Swarm Tactics. The longer range helps, and I actually like my ion canon shooting later in the round to set up the next round. Here is one squad I was toying with:

HWK-290: · JAN ORS
Decoy
Ion Cannon Turret
Z-95 HEADHUNTER: · AIREN CRACKEN
B-WING: BLUE SQUADRON PILOT
Fire Control System
X-WING: · BIGGS DARKLIGHTER
It lacks the Jan HLC combo, but it has other tricks going for it. I've not had a chance to test it out yet.

It may sound goofy to you - and probably unfamiliar to a lot of people - but using dices as the plural is not grammatically wrong. It might not be common, but it is not wrong.

You will find it well hidden in extensive dictionaries and some linguistics and language teachers even encourage making dices more common than it is, what with there being no exclusive plural form with dice being being used in both the singular and plural form.

I do understand you were helping, but correcting someone's language do open you to critique if your corrections are not flawless. You opened yourself to that correcting Michiel, as have I correcting you. It's the circle of life (and grammar police) passing it on. :D

Really love the Jan ion, Ibstan with opportunist, fire control, and HLC, Wes combo. So many attack die that no one is safe. Kind of better for epic but a fun little combo.

"The dices is cast" - Linguistically challenged Julius Caesar as he crossed the Rubicon, 49 BCE

Et tu, brute!

He had to contend with a lot of stuff. Luckily English wasn't one of them ;)

"Dice" is the Plural, the singular is "a die" so it's not "Dices"

Good Video.

I don't think you are right.

Quoting: "Historically, dice is the plural of die, but in modern standard English dice is both the singular and the plural: throw the dice could mean a reference to either one or more than one dice."

This is OUP so quite reliable.

I looked at Jan Ors a lot when I was young. She kickstarted my thing for female pilots.

Oh, wait. The card.

Yeah that's... That's totally what I meant.

Man. I subscribed as well.

I've been pondering a Jan list for a couple of weeks now, for when the new Aces are out. But she's sporting just ion and then Tactician instead of Nien Numb. I'm figuring that I'd be waddling about slowly with her anyway, so I'm counting on shedding the stress won't be a problem.

But getting ioned and stressed out as well, when in her arc, is going to be so annoying. Hah!

I might call this list: Stone in the shoe.

Thanks for calling your vids to my attention! I had the C-3PO idea as well, and the Battle Computer app is getting downloaded asap.
