ABXY = D&D party

By malladin.ben, in X-Wing

Sorry if this is a bit vapid, bit the thought just occurred to me so I thought I'd share it...

The ABXY build is like the X-Wing equivalent of a standard D&D party:

Fighter: B-Wing, hitting hard and taking damage on its armour/shield(s)

Wizard: Y-Wing (or HWK in a similar list) controlling enemy positions with the ion cannon, buffing the rest of the party (especially with Dutch or HWKs)

Cleric: X-Wing (especially if Garven) the all-rounder, can fight front line, but also good helps buff the party

Rogue: A-Wing fast and nimble, specialises in sneaking round behind people and hitting them with that killer blow up close.

Cheerio,

Ben

Interesting that it works out that well

And for extra points a y-wing can be built as a blaster type wizard if you give it protons. A bit beefier than your typical wizard though.

Bonus points if you can relate them to an RPG that was a SNES game.

And then came the Tie Swarm aka a pack of Goblins!

Interesting that it works out that well

Not really all that surprising. The D&D classes are basically archetypes of generic combat roles; agile swashbuckler, buff tank, artillery, generalist, so it makes sense that those same roles would show up in another combat game.

If I were keeping it in the snes rpg world....there's really only one obvious choice. Chrono Trigger

A-Wing is frog.

That's a neat observation, OP. I just threw this together in Voidstate's Squadron Builder:

Dutch w/ R4-D6* and Ion Cannon Turret

Garven

Green Sq. Pilot w/ Chardaan Refit, A-Wing Test Pilot, Push the Limit and Outmaneuver

Blue Sq. Pilot

TOTAL: 100

Might be fun to try out. Probably won't win Nationals or anything, though =P

*the one that lets you cancel damage dice down to 2 damage in exchange for taking stress tokens.

Anyone else picturing a dwarf trying in vain to see out the cockpit of a B-Wing now? An elf would be bad ass in an A-Wing, though...

FF6 (or called 3) comes into close second. For Sega it I would say either shining force or phantasy star 4.. With that being said, I concur 100%!

A-Wing is frog.

Glenn is actually a really good hard hitter, he is more like a b wing.. he crits so often with the hero medal..

Most people would relate them to characters. I bet no one remembers the code you have to input into the computer the first time you visit the future at the factory in chronotrigger! it's "XABY"!

Sorry, chaps the NES references are lost on me - my gaming was on a BBC micro and commodore amiga.

My list that I've been using with a lot of success is wedge, Dutch with ion, Garven and a naked prototype. I now have a B wing model so I can swap out wedge, who's a massive target for a b wing of some description. not sure yet whether to go for upgraded blue or a named pilot. I'm edging towards the blue, at least until I can get rebel aces.

Used to love the Commodore 64. Not sure if its like the Amiga. But its got my nod.

And then precede to wait 20 mins to play primitive versions of double dragon and Mario. :)

The amiga was a little later than the 64. A 512/1 meg model, competed with the atari ST, late 80s/early 90s, just before PCs started to become ubiquitous.

Isn't one of the pilots a Sullustan? :P

I think I would call the X-wing the Fighter and the B-wing the Paladin/Barbarian/Cavalier/Monk. You know that other class that can fill the same role as the fighter, but does it with a some special rules or abilities.

What do these words mean ?

And WTF is a " Chrono Trigger"?

Highly acclaimed roleplaying video game for the Super Nintendo: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrono_Trigger

Also, ABXY is equated to the buttons for a Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Thus the thought process.

I'll equate them to the jobs in FF5 and FFT when I get home from work tonight. :P

Yup, a 15-point A-wing can also serve as a really effective disposable meatshield too, since it very clearly falls on the side of being a tank, not a glass cannon.
