Munitions Failsafe: What's a 'Hit'?

By Mikael Hasselstein, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So, does the Munitions Failsafe only kick in when I roll '0' hits on the red dice, or does it also kick in when the defender rolls enough evades to counter all the hits I did roll?

Yes.

Any time there are no un-canceled <hit> or <crit> results, you have missed. If that's because you rolled none, or because the defender rolled enough <evades> or converted enough <focus> into evades to cancel them all.

Interesting. That actually gives the defender some incentive to allow one hit to get through in order to have the attacker use up his ordnance - that is, provided the defender has a choice, such as with a single focus that he can elect to use or not.

Thanks!

Yeah same thing that you see with Gunner. Sometimes the defender will take 1 hit, rather then letting the attacker use Gunner and maybe get even more hits on the 2nd attack.

Some corner cases relevant to this topic.

Lt. Blount always hits, regardless of the dice results, he just may not do any damage.

Draw their fire can make it so that the ship that was "hit" is not the ship that takes damage, but the original target us still the ship that was hit.

It is still a hit if other effects cancel the attack dice, ion weapons for example will cancel all the dice results, but only after the target has been "hit".

I know where you're going with this, but the phrasing is a bit off. The cancelation from Ion Cannons doesn't affect the hit because it happens after the hit has already been determined. If some effect were to cancel die results before the hit is determined, that could stop a hit from occurring.

I have gotten the answer to this, and quite a few other questions, down to a science.

This is the flow-chart to a single attack's combat:

  1. Attacker declares the target of its attack
  2. Attacker declares the weapon used in the attack
  3. Attacker rolls attack dice
    1. Defender modifies attack dice
    2. Attacker modifies attack dice
  4. Defender rolls defense dice
    1. Attacker modifies defense dice
    2. Defender modifies defense dice
  5. [squiggle]s cancel [boom]s
  6. [squiggle]s cancel [KABLAM]s
  7. Draw Their Fire happens
  8. Shields cancel [boom]s
  9. Shields cancel [KABLAM]s
  10. Defender receives a face-down damage for each remaining [boom]
  11. Defender receives a face-up damage for each remaining [KABLAM]

If anything happens in steps 7-11, the defender is Hit. Otherwise, the attack has Missed.
