Gambling in EofE

By R2D2fan, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hey Gamers,

One of the players in my Edge of the Empire is playing a smuggler pilot with a gambling addiction and I am wondering how you run a game of chance in the campaign. I can work out some of the skills used (deceit, charm, cool, etc.), but am wondering how the rolls would work out for the success of the players participating vs opponents. Any ideas would be much appreciated!!!!

thanks

Depends on how "chancey" the game is. I would default to Competitive Checks with many different games if you're betting against a bunch of other people, like with card games or races.

On page 27 of the free adventure Under a Black Sun, there are specific rules for sabacc, if you want to make a whole encounter out of the game.

Dueling Cool checks. To me that's the most fun. My group and I had a blast. I also ran some cards, where they made a dueling Cool check and if they won had it set up for them to get some extra cards in their 5 card hand to represent their superior gambling skills.

How much success they have can be scaled by how good you make the dealer.

Nifty idea, got any more details on that?

The way I did it was I had them roll their Cool against the dealer's Cool, and for every Success they got above what the dealer rolled they would get an extra card that hand to begin. For every two uncancelled Advantages I let them add a Boost die to their next Cool check on the following hand to represent 'counting cards', Triumphs were an upgrade. Then we played a kind of Triad poker with some BSG playing cards I have.

On the dueling dice I just did the Boost/Upgrade thing based on their rolls.

Just checking - by dueling, you mean Opposed, yes?

Sorry, meant competitive. I didn't write the idea down and now that one of my guys is GMing and mentioned it I kind of kicked myself. I honestly don't recall the Difficulty level I set, I am thinking probably Average. Anyway, they and dealer rolled against it. I think I called it Dueling Dice or something. I made the dealer a chump but they were starting players so I wanted it weighted in their favor. Think I made the dealer just Presence 2 with no Cool ranks. One of them had a 3 Presence and the other a 2 I think, with a rank of Cool each.

I found a template for Pazzak cards that I had made into real playing cards. I've used them in-game once and as a side game to keep players occupied. ;)

Sometimes we did opposed cool or deceit checks, but most of the time we played Dice Poker from The Witcher video game. In some very old games, I made and used Trin Sticks.

I was looking into incorporating some rolls that could "alter" the dice poker pool, or Trin Stick hand. One could roll deceit to cheat, or make cool checks and then I would then allow them to re roll a die, or change out a Trin stick. On a Triumph, they could turn a die to whichever side they wanted. I never did figure out the rules to this though, as we had to move and my group was disbanded. :(
