Some game-size questions

By Gibarian, in X-Wing

Only been playing for about a month, so I'm still figuring stuff out.

One of the first things that became clear was that 100 points was the de facto game-size. Incidentally, that left me slightly disappointed, because around ~125 seems like the sweet spot to me. I like unit upgrades over spamming extra bodies, though, no matter what game/system I'm playing, so that's probably just my personal bias showing through.

More recently, I discovered that 200 points seems to be the threshold for Epic games... which left me wondering; how are games in the 100-200 point range typically viewed? Is it commonplace to just use the equivalent of two combined 100 point squads, or do things like the Rebel Transport start to come into their own in this band? What would be the game-size threshold for the Transport to become both viable for the Rebel player, and still fair to the Imperial player?

How about board size? How many points before the 3x3 stops being ideal? Is the best step up from there a 4x4 or a 3x6? How many sets of asteroids do you use to fill out boards of those sizes?

I love 100 point, no more. Simple and fast and fun.

I like all sizes of game. 60 pt dogfights are super fun and fast (like playing a quick game of MtG) but I also like 200 point pitched battles.

In my experience 200 points is about the limit for a 3x3 play area. I typically use less asteroids as well (3 or 4) to lessen clutter and crowding.

I've also experimented with a 3x4 area and found it worked well with 200 pt 2v2 games

Recently I played against 2 of my friends (I had 250 points, they each had 125) on a 3x6 area with 8 asteroids. We used the Transport and it really came into its own with that many fighter escorts.

I've been playing casual games at 150 points with my usual X-Wing buddy. We felt 100 was too limiting, and I never intend on being a competitive player, so I don't mind getting used to an abnormal standard. We continue playing on a 3x3 with all the asteroids, but have yet to play with any massive ships, so I can't speak on their behalf.

I just picked up the GR-75 last weekend. I'd like to play some epic, but for now the 6-asteroid-100-point-deathmatch (6a100pDM for short, 6a100pDM for plural) seems to be the only game in town. <_<

I think I'll float the notion at the FLGS's tournament this coming weekend for a subsequent weekend.

That, or playing a campaign with my narrative mission engine, which should be online by then.

personally i like the 32 point game..... ...

Most point values work for the game, but I think most people tend to play the tournament standard 100 point game.

As far as board size, I'd agree 200 points on a 3x3 table is pushing it. But even 300 points per side on a 3x6 table seems rather roomy, I've played a couple 300 point games and it seems typically a good chunk of the board is empty.

You're right that the 100 point, 3'x3' board is the "normal" size for official single player tournament play. Many people like playing at this simply to keep themselves in tournament shape all the time. Epic tournament is either 200pt per play for Team Epic or 300pt for Single Player Epic - both played on 6' x 3' boards. If you skim over the scenarios in the Epic ships, several of the map sizes are neither the 3x3 or 6x3. So be creative!

That said, at our local game shop, we tend to play anywhere from 100 to 150 points normally for fun, casual games. We've played 200 point single player Epic as well, just for kicks.

In short, play whatever you want to play and remember the big rule... have fun!

I love the 100 points matchs and 3x3 for gamemat, greettings.
