How are you hosting Epic games.

By EmpireErik, in X-Wing

My logal game group request for an epic game has resulted in a large event.... How do you people play the epic points for the Imperials?

From a game request, now into an event, I am looking to host a 300 point epic game event.

I am thinking of allowing only 3 epic points so those who bought the Tantive can play it. Imperial players who have one can play the "evil cousin" of the tantive.

But my question is more closer to if a Rebel player has a Tantive and 300 points, how do you compensate and Imperial player for the same table if they do not have a huge ship?

Is 1 epic point equal to 100 points? Does a Rebel player with 300 points and a Tantive or a transport face a 400 point Imperial force?

Your experiance and suggestions are appreciated....

If you're Imperial, you get 300 points of ships. No Tantive. No Transport.

If you're Rebel, you get 300 points of ships. You may spend some of your points on up to 5 epic point ships. Tantive costs 3 and Transport costs 2. You still get 300 points and you still have to pay for those ships with your 300 points. You can include:

1) none of them

2) one Transport

3) one Tantive

4) two Transports

5) one Transport and one Tantive

I suggest you read up on the epic game format here: http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/ffg_content/x-wing/support/X-Wing-Epic-Tournament-Rules.pdf

I read the Epic rules, but I guess I need to clarify the question presented in the OP:

According to page 2 of the Epic Rules:

"The maximum squad points for each player is 300 points. A squad cannot exceed 300 points, though it may contain fewer than 300 points. The maximum epic points for each player is 5. A squad cannot exceed 5 epic points, though it may contain fewer than 5 epic points." See Epic Rules at p. 2.

There is nothing in the rules that says 1 epic point is equal to xx squad points. Also with the present status of the game only the Rebel player has ships to purchase with epic points. So it cannot be fair for Rebels to get 300 squad points and 3 epic points.

Therefore, what is this community doing to balance the forces?

Are you saying 1 epic points = 100 squad points?

Has anyone run an Epic game with huge ships?

The huge ships (and all the associated upgrades) have their own point cost, separate from the Epic Points cost.

You still use your 300 squad points to build up the huge ship. For example, (if I recall correctly) a CR-90 will use up 90 points before you add in the crew and hardpoints and other assorted upgrades.

Look at the cards.

It appears that you have two completely separate points totals to make a legal list. Total fleet points can't exceed 300 and epic points can't exceed 5. Those two totals are mutually exclusive and must be tallied separately.

The Rebel player still has to spend some of the 300 points to build the Transport and/or Tantive. They're not free to play, you're just limited to one of each, or two Transports, max. Or none, if you prefer to spend all 300 on traditional ships instead.

Thanks everyone for the input. The Team Epic news discussion explains this is good detail and that the Tantive has point costs for the fore and aft sections. I have not purchased the Tantive yet, and other players are bringing these.

Related, but not really related I find the most important thing for a big/epic game is a caller. The miniature club I play at is quite big, and it is not uncommon to play games with 4-5 players on each side with 100-200 points each. Lot's of ships, and now lots of capital ships.

We designate one player to be the caller- all PS 9 ships move, all PS 8 ships, etc. and then the same thing for shooting- keeps the game and action moving and cuts down on the "opps" I forgot to move, shoot, or take an action, etc.

Okay, so you only worry about initiative if it looks like two ships are going to collide, and you need to figure out who collides into whom? That, then, cuts down on time.

Do you designate a particular person - such as the one with the highest PS ships, who goes last? Or just the guy with the most penetrating voice?

I've recently played through a few team epic games with my gaming group and found the 400 points per side (200 each) works quite well. The game is epic and brutal, but doesn't feel like it bogs down if people are paying attention. Communication is key.

As to PS and speeding things up. We have also found that often times you can move things in sections. Namely that if a particular clump of ships is well out of range of any action just allow the player to move them while the more intricate (aka furball) flying is being worked through elsewhere. Teammates are crucial for this, "hey man, move my interceptors and focus while i try and K-Turn my defender." I feel the "caller" would only become necessary when you are playing with more than four people

Here is the write up with pictures that I did for it. http://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/108830-team-epic-battles-corvette-and-transport-first-spin/

Hope this helps, and welcome to epic play. A great deal of fun to be had here. :)

From an organizing point of view...I have helped set up every 2nd Thursday of the month is Epic Night.

On these nights, players are to have this ready

1. Be on time

2. Have 2 lists built

3. Have some prior contact with your team member if it's a team game

4. Have all models and materials ready to go no later then 20 minutes after start time

Is has helped keep epic games flowing and in good order

As for points, 400 seems to be the best, it allows each side to field huge lists. Huge ships have their own epic point costs plus regular squad building costs. We also only have ever seen 1 Tantive and 2 Transports on the table at once. That seems to be a solid and sound basis for large games. The balance is good and doesn't screw things up to badly.

Wow alot of good stuff, thanks. My event really started with a "hey is anyone interested in an epic game" and now we have about 10 players signed up. Looks like alot of fun.

I will try to report on it.

I've recently played through a few team epic games with my gaming group and found the 400 points per side (200 each) works quite well.

Pardon my stupidity, but are you talking about 400 total points (200 for each faction) or 400 points per faction (800 total)?

200 per player, which would be 400 per side, for a total of 800 points on the table. Sorry for any confusion.

Now I want to do 400 per person lol

Wonder how many rebel fighters I can field

In case anyone is interested, i have played a battle using the Cr-90 vs a small squad, matching up the point values (not epic) and it worked out so i won with one hit point left on my last y wing.
