Is Solo Play Viable?

By Xstroyes, in X-Wing

I've been eyeballing this game for a few weeks now. I really would like to play it, unfortunately my friends aren't interested in gaming and due to my odd work schedule, it's extremely difficult to attend local meetups or the nearby boardgame cafe.

That all being said, is it possible to play this solo? I've seen a couple variants posted that seem quite fuzzy but wasn't sure if there was a widely accepted variant?

Vassal would be your best bet

This thread makes me sad.

So there is a lot of ways to play this game solo.

You can set up obs and fly around them or try to make it from one side of the board to the another.

Also with my friends I got them to try it once and they loved it.

To answer your question, wildly accepted variant, no there is not.

Only if the word Han precedes it.

Your best bet is to find time for the meetups and groups.

All the groups should have some form of message board. There are probably several people lurking who also haven't been able to make it to the regular games due to scheduling conflicts.

Post on the meetup board and ask if anyone would be willing to teach you the game before you invest in it. A lot of players are more than happy to bring someone in. You could also make a small investment and use the same to find a game outside their regularly scheduled events.

It can be difficult at times to find a game, and a lot of it depends on the area. If you're interested though and make an effort, you'll find someone to play with.

A few solo scenarios I've considered use mines that shoot at nearby spacecraft. Just use the sattelite tokens from one of the starter kit missions. For each ship within range 2 or so of these mines roll an attack die for an unmodified attack. If you impose a time limit on the objective (destroy container, use actions to scan them, recover a team etx) then that creates a challenge to fly against.

i've had a great time learning the game with solo missions. The way I make it exciting is by working out multiple options for the rebel side (because they have fewer ships), and then letting a dice decide which option is chosen. I work out the Empire side as normal.

But, playing against others is still very much preferable. Maybe you should find/create a Facebook group for X-Wing players in your town. That makes finding pick-up games a lot easier.

it depends on how many voices are in your head.

we play several games per day

some day i will convince me, them, us to actually play with the miniatures.

Well, try it and tell us who wins???, greettings.

Possible? I guess if you're trying to learn the mechanics before playing real games and don't have any opponents available yet. Enjoyable? No. Most of the fun of X-Wing is out-guessing your opponent, take that away and you just have a boring dice game. So why not play a dedicated single-player game instead?

I disagree, I have had great fun with the AI program, it still gives that 'I out foxed that (insert named bad guy) from those nasty (insert rebs or imps)' lol

Its a great program for learning amd if you dont get enough opportunity to game with others...

I play solo all the time. I just move to the other side of the table and treat the other side as if it was someone else thinking of my best move.

If I'm rooting for one side I give the other side the benefit of a doubt when they hit asteroids and change their flight so it's tougher on the squad I want to win.

Yup if you are an only child and a very happy bachelor who does not live in an area with a game scene...like myself and a few many others on this forum, solo is great. I know that I am not the only Winger here that can have a whole lot of fun just setting up a nice table and looking at it and thinking about the films and my own visions of the battles too, over a drink and a vape.

-_-

Look at that nice-ass-table with all of them little ships and HUGE ships and stuff.

Hi!

I play sometimes solo - for practice and fun. I play now for 2 months, so I need a little practice.

I use this http://www.tynesidewargames.co.uk/xwingrules.html Solo Rules. They are great.

Have fun!

Funny this thread should pop up, I just played my first solo match yesterday. I played against myself, 3 Ties vs 1 upgraded xwing. My buddy had been loosing really badly against me even though he had 3 ties and I wanted to get in his shoes and see what it was like to play against my X wing setup. Took a little getting used to but I had a really competitive match and the Ties won out eventually but I now understand the Empire side sooo much better than I had before as someone who plays rebels. It was super informative and I intend to keep it up as I see it as a great source of growth for me in the future as a player.

Those are also good rules for solo, I used them as well before I found the online AI program...

I play solo exclusively —just by being both players and making a conscious effort to be fair, without getting too hung up on fairness. It will depend on what you're looking for out of the game, but for cinematic and imaginative experience, it's been worth the $1000+ for me.
