Storage Ideas For Larger Collections

By TheLoneDeranger, in X-Wing

I'm wondering if anyone out there has any good recommendations for storing and transporting larger collections. Right now I'm using the biggest tackle box I could find from Sportmans Warehouse and another large box made for tools, electrical equipment, or something that I found at Lowes. It's getting pretty tight and with all the new stuff coming out I'm going to need more room and I really don't want to start lugging around a bunch or individual containers. This is what my collection looks like right now:

Rebels - X Wing x6, A Wing x4, B Wing x3, Y Wing x3, Hawk x4, Falcon x2, Transport x1, Tantive x1

Empire - Fighter x12, Advanced x2, Bomber x5, Intercepter x12, Shuttle x3, Slave1 x3

I'm looking for a storage option that will hold all the ships, tokens, etc. with some room left to expand into. I'm thinking one of those large travel suitcases with wheels might work, with some of those plano storage containers, but the tricky part is fiindng ones for the larger ships such as the falcon, transport, tantive etc. It's difficult finding something large enough but not so large the the ships will flop around in thier compartments too much.

Lots of Interceptors....

Large ships I started storing my large ships in a larger compartment storage box with added foam padding:

Since I didn't have almost 20 large ships, I added in my large templates and a few prebuilt squads. This now acts as my primary storage and I put everything I do not want to play with for the week in Plano boxes in a duffle bag. I don't have a transport or Tantive yet, so I don't know if those would fit.

I guess it all depends on the price point for you. Battle foam has a great selection for X-Wing plus a useful tray editor to help customize to your needs.

I use generic storage containers that I picked up at Harbor Freight after seeing a thread about Stanley ones on boardgamegeek (which is down at the moment for maintenance but I'll link the thread at the bottom).

This one is big enough to fit the Transport and Corvette, with room to spare for other large ships.

This one is where I keep the standard ships, bases, dials, pilot and upgrade cards, asteroids, etc with my range ruler just sitting on top

I originally bought this one to have some more of the medium and small sized trays to trade out with the one above, but as my collection has grown I've taken to keeping tokens, my movement templates, and damage deck in it.

I've kept all the plastic from whatever I've bought and the expansion blisters fit into the largest tray size really well. I cut down the plastic from my core and the X-Wing went into the medium tray, with ties fitting right into the smalls. Buying these to carry around in the kind of travel container you're talking about might be more cost effective than several plano organizers. I have a Harbor Freight up the street so I kind of lucked out in being able to get them cheap and fast.

Here's the thread at boardgamegeek that shows someone using the Stanley ones and how they fit their stuff into them.

I'm not too worried about the price. I'll have to look into that battle foam.

I really like that stanley container though. Will it hold falcon sized ships?

The only thing I don't like about the battle foam idea is that I couldn't customize my existing trays as I buy new ships. For example I might decide to buy a second transport one day. I'm not really planning on it right now, but I might later, and if I didn't plan on that now I'd have to order a whole new tray for that one ship which is a real hassle.

I haven't really looked into a whole lot on how much you can customize those trays though to be honest. I actually wouldn't mind if you could buy small trays of a custom measurement for just a single big ship (like a falcon) that could fit into an existing compartment in a plano box or something. I just don't want to have to buy a huge tray with a bunch of ship compartments and rearrange everything because I decided to buy another shuttle, transport, falcon, etc.

Those Harbor Freight containers look promising. Fortunately there's a Harbor Freight where I live as well so I can go check those out. I sure wish I kept those blisters the ships came in, I didn't know I would get into this game as much as I have. Thanks for the tips so far everyone.

4 Hawks?

You're braver than I thought.

I started out with a pluck foam case and picked up a tool box at the dollar store to keep my odds and ends in.

With my collection the size it is now and expecting to get bigger, I had to switch to Plano. I picked up a large foam bag with 5 Plano cases in it and I have filled them all already, with room to hold the wave 4 ships I am planning to buy, plus their is room for one more Plano case.

I'm planning on keeping my large foam case and using it as Huge Ship storage.

I'll post pics when I can.

Battle Foams

This is from the US Shop Site the UK / Europe Site has not yet all of this Tray's but is also ok

I have not yet my Battle Foam Pack but want to buy the 720 together with the Rebel & Imperial Foam Try + a 1,5 and 2 inch Custom Tray (you can Design there your own Tray's ) for all Cards, Tokens , Shipbases and all other Stuff what you need for X-Wing.

That means at the end i have there some space left 3,5 inch where i can create later for Wave 4 & 5 ships my own Tray's .
