Pushing the Game Engine Limits?

By Marvingardns, in X-Wing

I think that FFG will branch into other areas of this game whilst keeping the same mechanics.

Ground based battles: I have mentioned ground based gaming with AT-ATs and AT-STs in the past. Basically mobile turrets that have a very limited manoeuvre dial. Like Epic, it would be a spin off game for those that choose.

Scenario packs: Offering specific pieces of terrain and an accompanying campaign, mission booklet. A Death Star attack set with turrets and rules for them, a battle around the tops of skyscrapers on Coruscant, a space station attack, etc.

I would prefer FFG to explore these kind of alternatives/enhancements and really don't want to see the table covered in a salad of obscure EU scraps.

The grounds based battles would be great - and something I'd certainly want to see, but how feasible is it?

If sticking to the classic era, then the choices for models are fairly limited - certainly more so than with the starships, even if it dipped into the EU there's not a lot to add. As your comment above, you're quickly into the salad of EU scraps (TIE crawler?).

They could release it as as self contained "one off", say ... "X-Wing: Battle of Hoth", with everything you need to skirmish a Hoth battle, but with say 3 speeders, one each of the two rebel cannon, some troops (both sides), 2 AT-STs, and 1 AT-AT, you'd be looking at a fairly hefty price.

If they released it as a starter with 3 models like X-Wing ("X-Wing: Ground Battles"), then all the extras could be purchased separately, but again we're back to the limited options for models to add, and I wonder if FFG would see it as sustainable if it could not release wave after wave of new models.

Don't get me wrong I'd ABSOLUTELY buy ground-based stuff, I'm just not sure how they'd do it.

And as to a Death Star Attack set - they could not take my money fast enough.
