How long does it take for you to play a game in vassal?

By Krynn007, in X-Wing

I just started to mess around with this vassal.

After playing around with it I feel like it must take forever to finish a game.

Zoom in and out of the map.

The rotation of the ships, templates etc.

I know the more you get user to it the faster it probably would go, but in comparison to a real game how much longer does it take to play a game?

I have found that for most people a game on vassal takes a little bit longer then in real life. Then some games on vassal take a lot longer.

Once you know the hot-keys it isn't to bad, but the biggest time sink is a vassal game starts once collisions start to happen. Have to back track moves and then micro them into place. I would say a hour 1 1/2 - 2 hours should be expected.

But I could be wrong and find out I'm the slow poke.

I play vassal with my 3 brothers in a 2 vs 2 150 pt each team game. It takes us 2-3 hours and we also spend half hour to choose our ships and set up. I have many squads saved so I take less time.

I found out how to save your squad.

Talk about jumping through hoops

It definitely take time get everything set up but once you save that saves time.

Right now I feel it is a good way to practice because I don't have to set up on my kitchen table.

The hot keys are not too bad one you get the hang of it

2-3 hours sort of thing. You play to completion, after all, not to a time limit, and things move JUST a bit slower

Ok.

So my assumption was right. It does take a little longer just due to hot keys, having to keep turning everything, zooming in and out and things like that.

So my next question is when your playing what does the majority do with their tokens, ship and upgrade cards?

Do you open the player window, or just keep Everything on the board?

Also how picky are some people on vassal. It looks like it can be tricky to get things to line up 100% unless you zoom all the way in

That's a long time for 100 pt squads

I've only used Vassal to play with my brother because we live in different towns. It's hard for me to have all the windows open on my computer, but he's got 3 monitors on his computer so he can have everything laying out.

Last time, I just laid out all of my cards in front of me, and only put the ships on the board. I used my actual dials because he trusted me not to cheat, so then I didn't have to worry about anything except for the occasional maneuver template (or the firing range thing because sometimes clicking the firing arc button causes the ship to jump to some other random spot on the map). I did use the dice in the game. The game took less than an hour for XYAB versus 4 TIE Interceptors.

FYI, when this happens, toggle the target lock on/off. It puts the ship back in place.
