It's "On the Boat" could take on a whole other meaning ...

Wonderwaagh makes my heart hurt

F&%@ Him... and everybody that looks like him.

You are better than that.

;)

How pleasant.

I think Cubanboy knows that I just like to give him a hard time, and he takes it well. Anyone with a genuine problem is always welcome to send me a private message, provided they keep the expletives to themselves.

On the other hand it's hard to disassociate your Avatar from what you say, making you come off extra hostile. At least until you start reading everything you say in Cookie Monster tones. :P

That's one way of taking the edge off. Seriously, though. How hard is it to tell the difference between an Ork and a troll? It says so right beneath my name!

...or you could just stop being an ass.

;)

Or you could ignore me and go about your own business, rather than risk getting reported.

When it comes to 2016 I turn off the TV and install Adblock on my computer.

Honestly, Revanchist pretty much has the right of it. The only way I can stomach the daily news is if it's presented to me by Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert. They have obvious left-leaning tendencies, but when you're in the business of comedy nobody is safe from a good lampooning.

The man has made it clear he is not digging your just being hard on him deal, yet you hunt after him all of the time.

YOU need to be banned here.

I would of sent you off week one when you came on here literally accusing Miniatures Market or being liars and a sneaky poorly managed business.

Leave people alone and learn to be of value without all of the attention seeking hate and drama...already.

:D

Actually, the whole MM thing wasn't my first rodeo, and I stand by my comments. That's still rather beside the point, and I'm not inclined to re-hash the subject for yet a third time.

If you have a problem with how I present myself, you can either report me or send me a message. What you're doing right now is hardly proof of your own good character. I'm sure Cubanboy is more than capable of defending himself, supposing he genuinely feels as abused as you make him out to be. Considering the number of my posts that he likes, and the self-deprecating tone of his own, I don't suspect that to be the case.

So, back on topic?

^^ This !

I will have to turn off my TV, turn off my phone, turn off my fax, lock my door, prepare to shoot all unsolicited callers ... :P

Oh look, disparaging remarks about Fox news... I put my shocked face on...

Okay, Einsteins: Did anyone bother to notice the store is from the Associated Press? It is just reprinted on Fox. No you didn't, instead you jumped to make accusations. Fox has a wide variety of views on it, half the time they are like watching CNN Lite. I dare say that Fiox has far more liberal commentators on than MSN, CNN, etc... have conservative commentators. Bob Beckel and Juan Williams are just a few of the more notorious liberal ones skulking around regularly on Fox.

There are only a few news show I will watch on Fox but I certainly cannot stand the blatant obvious liberal slant of the remainder of the usual media outlets.

I really look to the game forums for a fair and balanced news review... Please do us all a favor and stuff it away now.

Comments really should be reigned in to reflect concern that this could interfere with shipping of our precious goodies.

But as someone who deals a bit with Longshoremen, Jones Act, maritime, etc... let me correct the comments about the wages and positions: What is reflected in the story is absolutely correct. Those are not fictional wages, Longshoremen make very good for what they do and considering most of them are barely above neanderthal level. One of the last Longshoremen I dealt with could not speak English, had next to no education, was not a citizen of the US, and was earning about $500+ a day. In excess of that he was also receiving disability from the US for the past few decades for an injury he suffered in Mexico before ever coming to the US. I hold neither the stevedore companies or the ILA in high regard. They could all be replaced by more competent workers for half the money.

I'm sure an enlightened gamer will be along to tell me how wrong I am but for the record, I have 20 years experience in this field and was the lead investigator in the Deep Water Horizon accident.

The article points out that 896 billion dollars worth of commerce passes through those ports. If all 20000 employees earned the max $210k per year, that's less than .5% of the commerce they enable. Seems like a good deal for the corporations using their service to me

Not quite so simple. Now from that amount deduct the cost of manufacturing, cost of shipping to include the cost/operation/management/upkeep/etc.. of the vessels, crews, the port itself, each individual entity corporation involved in the shipping, storage, loading/unloading, and subsequent shipping, don't forget all the taxes, fees, and admin cost for a near endless lists of international, federal, state, and local administration and government entities. Now don't skip all the benefits, insurances, retirements for all those involved. Now we can move onto the cost of loss and fraud, many a cargo container/etc.. never reach their destination. Lots of things also disappear on the docks. This does not even come close to being a complete list of associated costs.

The ILA/Longshoremen are in no way a good deal.

Sure did, but with glorious GIMP Sir.

I wonder how much the average longshoreman takes in per year. The salary is listed in the article at about 100k/year for a full-time longie, which sounds good. But the impression I'm getting after doing a bit of checking around is that longshoreman hours are a bit erratic. Sometimes there is a lot of stuff to load/unload, sometimes there isn't. So some weeks there is a lot of work and hours to be had, but other weeks there aren't. The averages are what really matters here.

So I'm not convinced that $100k is a typical salary. The average salary could be lower, or higher; that could mean a lot for the question of whether a strike is or isn't justified.

-judgment reserved-

The article points out that 896 billion dollars worth of commerce passes through those ports. If all 20000 employees earned the max $210k per year, that's less than .5% of the commerce they enable. Seems like a good deal for the corporations using their service to me

As stated above, you have to pay to keep the lights on, capital expenses, healthcare, retirement, medical, etc.

Overhead is commonly another 2.5x of direct employee labor cost. So that 0.5% number is probably closer to 2%. And that's just for the gatekeeper, you still have to pay the transportation, both internationally and then to get to the distribution centers.

Unrelated, I'm surprised nobody has mentioned NPR for news. I find them much more engaging and willing to take a wider and more questioning view than any of the main polarized news sources.

And then there's places like slashdot. They're generally a bunch of tin foil hatters, but then, with all the NSA type stuff getting released, apparently they were right. In any event there is regularly very interesting stuff posted there that doesn't usually hit the mainstream.

Now that I have admitted I'm a nerd, well... I guess the MathWing threads already gave that away anyway. Too late! :D

According to one of my accounting professors its because businesses in the Netherlands work with the unions and make decisions based on what is best for everyone, stockholder, employees, and customers, while businesses in the United States work only on the premise of maximizing returns, which often results in policy that is not as good for the employees.

It's not just the unions, any company with 50 employees or over is required by law to have a works council, elected by the employees. That council has some strong rights concerning the way the company is governed, ie the board of directors can't just decide that the factory workers now have to start at 6 in the morning, they'll have to motivate that and if the works council doesn't agree they will battle it out in court. A good works council (and / or a union, the two aren't necessarily related) is concerned with ensuring that the people will remain employed, and so you work in harmony with the company because you are part of that company.

There's much less antagonism, everybody wants to make more money after all. :P.
