Minion Groups

By arunwe2012, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I've read some threads regarding this but still need some help / clarification.

I don't understand the concept of "total wound threshold". You add the wt of all the minions that belong to the group. Ok. So if you have 4 thugs with 5 wt, you have a total of 20. Now you inflict (pass soak) a total of 7 wound damage. Since you excess 5, you kill a thug. Next attack inflicts 5 damage. Now you have 13 total, and a second thug dead. Next one inflicts 9. Now you have a total of 21, which is higher than the total wound threshold, but not enough to kill two minions -since you would require 24 total to kill all four-? Or once the total wt is exceeded, all minions die, no matter their individual wt?

Once the damage to the group exceedes the combined WT of the entire group, everyone is down (maybe dead, maybe KO, maybe bleeding out).

I know 9-past-Soak isn't enough to kill two thugs, but you've got to remember that combat rounds aren't fixed in seconds, they can be a minute long, and an attack roll doesn't represent a single shot, but all the shots taken by a character over that round. Each member of the Minion group may be getting chipped away with other shots that, by themselves, haven't been enough to put an individual down.

If I don't kill a thug I track wounded thugs.

My understanding of it is a bit different (and probably wrong given my track record), but it doesn't seem to matter how much damage an individual attack does, just the total damage. So, in your example setup, if the first attack does 3 points, no one dies, if the second does 7 then your total is now 10 so two minions die from that one attack.

On page 390 it says, 'Individual members of the group are defeated one at a time, each time the total wounds suffered exceeds that group member's share of the wound threshold." Which to me means that only the total wounds matter, not the wounds for each specific attack.

I've thinking about this and I think I found how it works. In my previous example, I have 4 thugs with 5 wt. That's a total of 20. When I inflict wound damage in excess of individual wound threshold, one thug dies. So, when I inflict a total of 6, 11, 16 and a final of 21, my gang of four thugs is eliminated. If i inflict a critical damage, then I outright kill a minion, sum up 5 damage (one minion's worth of wounds) to the total and then apply the rest of damage (note: I think that soak is not applied on a critical to a minion, if i understand correctly)

I think the key phrase is this: "Individual members are of the group are eliminated one at a time each time the total wounds suffered exceeds the group member's share of wound threshold". So, if individual wt is 5, then you add +1 and kill a thug at 6, another at 11 (10 +1), another at 16 (15+1) and the final one at 21 (20+1).

See, I knew I was doing something wrong. I took the exceeded language to mean equal to. It's kinda funny on page 215. A character is "wounded" if his wounds is less than his threshold but he's "incapacitated" when his wounds is more than his threshold. So when a character wounds equals his threshold, he's neither wounded nor incapacitated.

This is covered in the FAQ/Errata doc and matches what you've said here.

I like juxtaposing your comment with you sig. It makes me imagine you using the above as a term of endearment. :)

I track minion groups slightly differently, only to make it easier for me to tell when one drops. If I have 4 storm troopers, I scribble down 4 '5s' next to each other on my scratch paper....then just do the math when the damage comes in... I then narrate the scene accordingly.

PC fires Heavy Blaster pistol, gets 5 net success....after soak (5) the damage is 7...which (if the group is fresh) kills one storm trooper and deals 2 damage to another.

"(insert character name here) fires off several shots from her pistol and strikes true! One of the troopers is hit twice in the chest, knocking him off of his feet...a second is hit in his mid-section. He winces, but continues to press the attack."

Zackly how I do it also.
