Orlando Regionals - my first bat rep

By R2whistler, in X-Wing Battle Reports

First I'd like to thank Coliseum of Comics for putting on a great event, especially the TO who did an incredible job of keeping everything straight and the pace moving. I'll try and recreate my opponents builds, but I may get some of the upgrades wrong so I apologize ahead of time if I misrepresent your build.

My build: Dagger x2+adv sensors, Gold Y+Ion Turret+R3-A2, Rookie X

Round 1

I killed it 100 to 0 in this one - Bye

Round 2

This was an interesting one since we had similar builds. If memory serves he had Blue B, Blue B+Ion Cannon, Grey Y+Ion Turret, Grey Y+Ion Turret+R3-A2 with something else I can't remember. Basically a knife fight where I was able to use advanced sensors to out maneuver him. He killed my Rookie, I killed everything else.

Win 100-21

Round 3

Faced another 4 ship Rebel build, this time Wedge+Swarm Tactics, Tarn+Swarm Tactics, Rookie x2 I think. Basically built as tight an asteroid field as possible and setup opposite corner from him. We met in the rocks where advanced sensors ruled the day, and between an ion shot and a misjudged K-turn he ended up with Tarn and a Rookie sitting on asteroids. By the end he was able to take out my Rookie and a Dagger but all he had left was a Rookie on the run. Couldn't catch him in time so we ended on time.

Win 78-48

Round 4

Yet another 4 ship Rebel build, Wedge+PTL+R2 Astro, Biggs, Rookie x2. This one was rough, the dice fell apart on me and I couldn't get rid of Biggs, also didn't do a very good job of forcing him through the rocks so he held formation well. He killed a Dagger and the Gold I believe and we timed out with 3 of his 4 X-wings with 1 hull left :(

Loss 0-52

Round 5

First Imperial build, BH+Proton Bomb, BH+Proton Bomb+Flight Instructor, Omicron+Vader. Took my B's up the gut through the rocks as fast as I could and Y+X up the right side, He took his Lambda at the B's and the BH's toward the X+Y. Got some really good range one shots on the Lambda plus a stress from the Y and was able to wipe it out without it getting to use Vader. Then focused on one of the BH's and took it out, he then conceded and flew last BH off the board.

Win 100-48

I was feeling pretty good about my top 8 chances at this point and did get in as the 4th seed along with the 2 guys who drove to the tournament with me, we took the 2nd, 4th and 8th seeds.

Quarter Finals

Surprise! Another 4 ship Rebel, Wes, Biggs+R5-P9, Rookie x2. I did a better job of seperating Biggs in this one, hit him with Ion on first pass then took him out next round. Then knocked out Wes and a Rookie and he conceded. Top 4!

Semi Finals

The match I'd been dreading all day, Tie Swarm. This guy was undefeated to this point and was a very good player. I'd been keeping an eye on his matches all day and was not looking forward to this one. While play testing for Regionals we had seen that Tie Swarm had been winning and placing highly in a lot of the other regionals so I had put some extra practice in against that particular type of build. He was running Howl+Swarm, Black Squad+DTF x2, Academy x4. He took initiative and started cornering the rocks, but I was able to block this a little by 3 range cornering 1 and was able to create a bit of junk in the left center of the board. He setup on the right side and I put my X+Y in the center and B's a little to the left to go through the rocks. He started straight down the side of the board at a medium pace and I took my XY out real slow, then B's as fast as they could go. After 2 turns of this I banked my XY towards the swarm and at this point the B's had gotten about half way up the board and were turned in towards the side of the swarm. He took range 2 shots on the X with the left half of his swarm and knocked it down to 2 hull, the other half didn't have arc to shoot anything. Meanwhile I was able to take out an Academy with range 3's from the B's and ioned another with the Y. On the next turn he 2 turned to get after the B's, his Academies moving first. My Rookie was next where I pulled a K-turn into the middle of his formation, landing right behind his 3 Academies and right in front of the high skills about to move. This forced those high skills into overlaps so actions lost and 2 of the 3 couldn't shoot the Rookie, plus more importantly howl runner was separated from half his squad. It devolved from there as the B's knifed their way through the broken swarm and we timed out with 5 dead ties including Howl and one dead Rookie. On to the Finals!

Finals

Now at this point it was almost midnight and I was on my 7th match since noon, plus I had started the day on only 2 hours of sleep because of an all nighter at work the night before. So needless to say I was getting punchy unfocused so I was a little worried about it all falling apart here. The big thing I had going for me was that I was re-matched the my one loss from round 4 so I had some insight into his tactics. Similar setup to before with the rocks and staring placement except this time I swung the B's out a little more. Came in at each other and he able to ping the shields off my Rookie from range 3 while I was able to return the favor to one of his Rookies. Then I pushed the XY up fast to get in close and start laying into Biggs. I was able to knock him out this round with the B's and the X then I was free to Ion Stress Wedge. From there it was the usual B knife fight and he conceded with one Rookie left and having killed my Rookie. I Won!!!!

This was my first regional and I have to say I had a blast, it was a great location and everyone I played was super nice, especially Frank who I played in round 4 and the final match. So that's it, from there I collapsed in a heap and finally slept.

Congratulations on your win. :-) I enjoyed reading about your matches, very short & sweet.

My goal is to attend a regionals at least once in my Xwing career. The thought of 7 or more matches in a row is amazing! I know it can be a turn off for some people, but I would really enjoy getting to play against tons of new builds & that many players.

What were the prizes for this regional? A medal & some really nice acrylic items right?

Congrats on the win, glad to see someone who won one of our store champs in Jax took the win down there. Sad I couldn't hang around to watch, but having gotten up so early and driven so far, with a mandatory return drive the same night, I had to split. I'm the lone player from Kingsland that drops in on Jax all the time.

One edit to make on your post, however: The round 5 guy was the same guy who handed me my only loss until the finals, and his firesprays had Proximity Mines, not proton bombs.

The prizes for the winner were a 1st round bye at nationals and an acrylic trophy. Top 4 got maneuver templates that match the store championship range rulers (the same bright lime green.) Top 8 got the translucent dice (3 red, 3 green.) Top 8 got a set of acrylic evade tokens, and top 64 (or every player for most regionals, ours included) get a Luke Skywalker promo card. This store also randomly drew a player from the list to win a Tantive IV model. The TO told me that Alan took that, by the way, so there's another prize for Jax players out of Kissimmee

You're right, he did have proximity mines.

Congratulations on winning the tourney. Glad to hear that my only loss in the standard tournament made it to the final round, and that you the guy who eliminated me in the first round won the whole thing. You flew very well throughout the night and congrats especially on the TIE swarm. I had been keeping a close eye on him also all day and was a little nervous about facing him myself.

edit on our match, you killed biggs with 2 round of R3 and R2 shots, then ionized Wes on the first run.

You're right, I was so sleep deprived by that point alot of things were a blur.
