First game of X-wing - 60 points

By Kahadras, in X-Wing Battle Reports

I managed to play my first game of X-wing today. Although I hadn't got any experience I'd seen the game played a few times so I had some idea about what I was doing. My opponant was playing as the Imperials and after a bit of discusion we decided on a 60 point game.

Imperial force -

Black Squadron pilot - TIE fighter

Black Squadron pilot - TIE fighter

Mauler Mithel - TIE fighter

Night Beast - TIE fighter

Rebel Force -

Blue Squadron pilot - B wing

Rookie pilot - X wing

Prototype pilot - A wing

With my rock bottom piloting score I had to set up first. I dropped the B-wing and X-wing on the left side of the table for mutual support while I left the A-wing on the far right in the hope to distract my opponant. The Imperial's set up with his two named pilots on his left (opposite my B-wing and X-wing) and his two Black squadron pilots in the center.

In the first couple of turns I was careful not to move up to quickly. My opponant countered by moving up as quickly as possible. His two Black Squadron pilots made a bee line for my A-wing (which I was quite happy about) while the named pilots engaged the rest of my units. I was dissappointed by the first few rounds as I failed to do much damage. Mithel and Night Beast dodged my shooting and the two Black Squadron pilots quickly caused problems for the A-wing.

By turn four I was really worried that things had gone pear shape. I'd only done a point of damage to a single Black Squadron TIE fighter and my A-wing was running away up the board with no shields, 1 hull point and two TIE's behind it. Things turned around though with some neat maneuvers on the other side of the table I managed to get Night Beast into range 1 of both the B-wing and the X-wing and blew him to bits after he'd taken a couple of shields off the B-wing.

The real game ender came in turn 6. I flipped my A-wing around and mounted a last deperate attack on the Black Squadron pilots. Both Mithel and a Black Squadron pilot failed to take off the last hull point and the A-wing managed to take out the Black Sqaudron TIE fighter in one shot (3 dice, 3 hits, no evades) At this point my opponant made a massive mistake and lost track of which way Mithel was facing. I'd set things up to catch him in a cross fire and the fact that my opponant got things mixed up ment that Mithel ended up in the cone of fire of all three Rebel ships. This proved to be massive overkill as the B-wing took him out in a single volley of fire after Mithel's shooting managed to knock the remaining shields off him.

My opponant conceeded at that point. He had one slightly damaged Black Squadron TIE fighter left. I had my untouched X-wing, a B-wing with no shields and a damaged A-wing with no shields.

Welcome to the forums.

This game just gets deeper and deeper with strategy with the more expansions you pick up and learn how to fly.

Have fun and fly casual.

Cheers.

I decided to try to keep things as simple as possible for my first game by not taking any named characters or ship upgrades. I'll explore these options after I've got a better grasp of the basic mechanics. I was impressed by the B-wing but that might just have been from the fact that it was in the right place at the right time. The main plan was for the A-wing to distract my opponant and the X-wing to cover the B-wing.
