Well... i want to throw my hat in the ring as well... (Phantom list evaluation)

By TheDarkPilot, in X-Wing

I saw a lot of formidable lists running around here and also read a lot of articles (late ones and old ones).

I kinda always struggle...

The problem i have with the Phantoms is the cost... and what do i get..

It is nether the less, fragile.

Of course i can argue now.. whatever... still better then an Interceptor with just 3 hull...

Anyhow... so i cam up with this list...

Lets hear what you think...

- Soontir Fel + Push The Limit (30)

- Echo + Flight Instructor + Sensor Jammers + Predator + Advanced Cloaking Device (45)

- Academy Pilot (12)

- Academy Pilot (12)

I guess some of the first intentions will be.. go with VI.

Ill be honest.. if i have a ship already, that does cost a lot... give it something else then VI.

I feel like the 2 defense upgrades outweigh the VI by far so i can go with one offensive skill...

That being said...

What do you think?

I feel if your going to use advanced cloak then VI is the way to go.

Without VI that increases the amount of overall ships that will get to fire before you, leaving yout with two defense dice.

With advanced cloaking yout want the cloak back on asap.

I never used flight instructor, but I usually try to avoid defensive upgrades that require a re roll. For the points is a gamble.

I like sensor jammer on a Phantom but that's four points. It can help, but when using echo Ive been relying on his maneuverability.

Recon Specialist is nice too because you get two focus, which imo is a little more certain than counting on a reroll. Especially with four dice

Sensor jammer is not a guarantee either because if your opponent had a focus, he can just use that and turn that focus back to a hit.

Since you modify first, then your opponent

Ya... exchanging the Flight with the Recon might be a good idea...

I would have to see how i will play that phantom anyway, since i most likley go with evade in my activation phase.

Of course it is just a token... and i might be better off having 2 focus... argh.. decisions decisions...

The problem i have with Echo and VI mostly is... its still only a 8 PS.

If it would be buffing me up to 9 i would not even think about giving it to Echo it just would be a done deal...

What about outmaneuver?

Since.. as you said... its all about maneuverability.

I just found with Echo using the bank instead of a straight echo can really move around. There are some diagrams of how he can move, and therefore he is really good dodging archs. Out of the many games I've never had to do one k turn yet with him as well

Ya I wish echo was a seven instead of six for ps,but eight is still Pretty good but look at it like this.

You move into position.

You focus and get two

Having two evade dice isn't all that bad. I mean xwings and Firespray can still do well. (though Firespray has more hp) having two focus is good for your attack and especially good if you have four or five defense dice

Having the focus also helps your two defense of a higher ps ship does get a shot on you, and you can still have one for your attack after

Lately I've been doing a lot of focus. I use to do evades but with more dice I think focus can pay off more.

So many times I roll dice and roll blanks and multiple Focus

I think Recon spec is awesome, but that's my opinion

Well...

learning by doing is the saying... i like the recon too tho... just have to break my habbit...

So i changed it for now to... Reacon+Sensor Jammer+VI+ACD

Maybe we will get some more ideas... haha. lets see...

This game makes me crazy.. too many options :)

Keep in mind what works well for others may not for the rest.

Try it, tweak it as you see fit

Just FYI. If you are actually regularly using the sensor jammer or flight instructor on the Phantom then you are probably doing it wrong.

Phantom options certainly ARE crazy. Recon helps especially against the Falcon matchup. Cant dodge that turret, after all. Maybe sensor Jammer can find some use as well. When the falcon starts using evades to survive longer, you also survive longer. Or if you use academy ties to action deny. Lots of good uses for that card.

Also I think that whenever you make a phantom list you should worry less about what you put on the phantom and worry more if the remainder of the list can win without the phantom.

Which is why so far in my best two lists with Echo they both have her with veteran instincts and advanced cloak. Only one out of two have fcs cause I had the points.

My point is I try to keep her at a low point cost, and fit in more ships

More fire power the better

Also make the main force look more threatening, and hopefully my opponent leaves echo

Thats why i throw in Baron Fel.

I won several matches just with him and using Acadamy Pilots as either cannon fodder with evade all the time or plinging and therefore annoy the enemy...

As said i really might have to wait till i finally got it in my hands and play a couple of times before i get a feeling for what is really "needed" and what might be just wasted points..

As said earlier... i adjusted my Phantom and tried it yesterday with the specs we had discussed above.

(recon+sj+vi+acd) and it worked fine.

Of course i had 1 rebel with the same PS which had initative and it really killed echo... but well... better learn how to fly that thing :)
