Beta book outgassing?

By bradknowles, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

Folks,

I know the official A-CRB release is just around the corner, and I already have my copy on order. But meanwhile, I figured I'd go ahead and buy a copy of the Beta rulebook to have. If nothing else, we can use it to help fill out and verify the information we're putting into the FFG SWRG Index at http://swrpg.viluppo.net/

However, when I got the book in and started reading it, my eyes started burning and tearing up, to the point where I was temporarily blind. Even now, it's been in my house for almost a day, and it still reeks of chemicals. It's not causing my eyes to burn anymore, at least not for the short periods of time that I've tried to read it, but it certainly doesn't smell very nice.

Am I the only person to have experienced this problem with the book? I thought I had noticed other copies of the Beta book that seemed like they felt weird and stank, but nothing like the copy I just received.

Anyway, just wanted to check. Thanks!

You know, my copy's been sitting out since last Gencon and it has no such offensive odor, even to my wife who seems to be able to find any offensive odor. Seems like it dissipates with time.

It seems some people got copies with a bad odor, and some didn't. I ordered two copies from two different places, had them within a day or two of them being available to people that didn't attend GenCon, and neither of them had any offensive odor. In fact, they both had a rather pleasant "new book" smell.

I was curious and did some reading. Odd smells could be from the paper making process, inks used, binding glue, etc. Others have pointed out China isn't a bastion of good environmental practices. How long it takes to dissipate probably has a lot to do with how 'fresh' off the presses it is, where it was shipped, stored, temperature, humidity, etc.

Also an aspect a lot of people do not think about is the fact that these are delivered to stores in card board boxes. These cardboard boxes and books are shipped very similarly in cargo containers. Cargo containers are not generally hermetically sealed or even climate controlled.so I will give you an example.

I used to work for a office/factory supply warehouse and we were getting in steel shelving from China. So apparently the shelving was shipped out in February and did not arrive at our warehouse until July. Now part of this is because we were on the east coast and it came all the way to Savannah by boat. It then sat on the dock for about 2 months while it was cleared by customs. It was then shipped to a holding facility that we used to store containers that we were either a)not ready to recieve or b) didn't want to receive yet. So we get the conatiner in about 7 that morning and open it up and just get blasted by a wave of moist air. Since the container had gone through so much different climates to get there it basically just turned into a sauna at some point then cooled down then heated back up. There was literally fog rolling out of this container and one wicked chemical smell. Our boss did a little digging and found out that the container had previously carried nontoxic cleaning products on its previous leg to China. So needless to say the wood in the container absorbed some of the odor and then bled it off as it went through climate changes.

So just saying that it could of been any number of things that cause those chemical smells.

Mine smelled kinda weird when I got it from Miniature Market. It doesn't smell weird anymore, though.
