Epic TIE Swarm

By Qapla187, in X-Wing

So I've got an Epic game this week and came up with the following.

TIE Swarm

300

Onyx Squadron Pilot

Alpha Squadron Pilot

Alpha Squadron Pilot

Alpha Squadron Pilot

Saber Squadron Pilot

Push the Limit

Royal Guard Pilot

Push the Limit

Obsidian Squadron Pilot

Academy Pilot

Academy Pilot

Academy Pilot

Academy Pilot

Academy Pilot

Gamma Squadron Pilot

Flechette Torpedoes

Cluster Missiles

Scimitar Squadron Pilot

Gamma Squadron Pilot

Flechette Torpedoes

Concussion Missiles

Scimitar Squadron Pilot

Flechette Torpedoes

Concussion Missiles

Pretty much every Imperial ship I own aside from the large bases. My real concern here is the overall low pilot skill, but I'm hoping the sheer numbers will help even things out. 16 ships total, 12 have 3 defense, 38 attack dice and 63 hit points.

Has anyone else run a swarm in Epic? And if so how did it fare?

Very, very well.

Doing 300 points with a Tantive and Bs/X Wings for support vs. 12 Fighters (Howlrunner + Backstabber included), 2 Bounty Hunters, 2 Bombers and the rest Intercepters is indeed epic. Rebels usually get annihilated because they just can't drop enough ships before getting gunned down by a swarm. Even the Tantive can't fare well against a massive swarm, unless you feel like ramming them, but at that point all of their PS1-3 dudes will be dodging it before it gets to chomp them.

Still, very fun and exciting for both players.

One of these days I am going to have 20 TIE zoomies on that table of mine...dammit man!

If you want to play epic just for fun, okay you can do that, but for me it's not fun if i don't stand the slightest chance of winning at least with the corvette.

Really sad, such an awesome model but if you want to play epic and win sometimes with Rebels, don't take it. The Transport is often worth it if you equip it reasonably, but the CR-90 is horribly overpriced in points.

I wonder if they have playtested it, because it's very disappointing. Maybe it will make sense when imperial huge ships come, but now it's utterly, completely useless.

On topic: well i would make use of the named pilots, especially Howlrunner is really a must-have, also in epic. Also try to stay on one initiative level for your non-named pilots. It's easier to move them in formations like that! Also with a combination of high skill named pilots and low skill non-named pilots makes for some earlier shots in shooting plus a lot of cheap ships for numerical advantage.

Actually, spamming 17 point Z-95s with Assault missiles really puts the hurt on Imperial squadrons as they loose all ability to fly in formation whatsoever. Then just pick them off with HLC B-Wings and the Tantive's superior guns.

Yeah, Assault Missiles are always a concern in epic play. If somebody isn't bringing them to the table, you're doing something wrong.

To the people who found the CR90 lacking, did you use the reinforce action against the TIE swarm?

Sorry, I was really hoping to see the "Infamous Howlrunner and 23 Academy TIE" list, the one that keeps me up at night.

The only epic game I played (600 versus 600) we had 5 rebel players and gave the one with the CR-90 150 points, the one with two transports 150 points and everyone else 100 points, and the 6 Imperials each got 100 points. We played named pilots only to keep the game time down, and after 4 hours were just cleaning up on the Imperials 270 - 125 points. I know I lost Ibtisam with a heavy laser cannon pretty early (I think it was the first ship of the game), and we lost an E-wing, so we may have only lost 3 ships total. I, as one of 5 players took out a TIE Defender, a TIE Bomber, and a Firespray, and then the Transports just started running over Interceptors.

The CR-90 started in the corner (6' x 3') opposite the transports, and it really ended up being like two side-by-side games, and it didn't seem to contribute much to the game. It might have taken out a shuttle, but we really just had bad placement to start.

Sleep when you are dead...many years from now.
