Mormont Shieldmaiden Defender keyword question

By GrailKnight, in Battles of Westeros

Do Mormont Shieldmaidens get Stalwart and Heavy Armour from the Defender keyword on their unit card, or do they need to have a defend token in their hex to benefit from Stalwart and Heavy Armour?

I only ask because under the Defend token description it says that any unit in a hex with a defend token is considered a Defender (Not highlighted like the keyword on the Mormont Shieldmaiden is). Is the Shieldmaiden's Defender keyword the same as the Defender trait given by a Defend token?

Mormont Shieldmaidens do need to drop a token to gain keywords Stalwart and Heavy Armor - they do not have them by default. The rulebook clearly says:

Defender
Units with this keyword can assume a defensive posture to protect against enemy off ensives. If this unit does not attack, place a defend token in its hex.
So, there is a condition. Otherwise, the maidens should have just Stalwart/Heavy armor on their unit card as there is no way for a unit without the defender keyword to get in a hex with a defender token and the entire concept of the mechanic makes no sense.
edit: sorry for a mistake - units can gain defender token via leadership cards. The answer to the question remains the same, however :P
