I took a leap and went ahead and bought my first set.
I bought the core set plus a B-wing and Tie advanced, and will have my first game later tonite against my son. If all goes well I will be getting more.

Good luck... you're gonna need it.

If you have any questions about the rules those of us who hang out in the rules section are always happy to answer questions, even common ones.
Some advice to start with. Once you've played a few games with what you have and find you like it, consider a 2nd core set next, it's the best value you can get. 3 ships, plus more templates, dice and a extra damage deck. Makes playing a lot smother.
Also look out for the Barnes and Noble 50% off liquidation sales coming up. They are getting out of Xwing and soon they will be getting rid of all they have at 1/2 off.
Welcome to the game and he forum, hope you enjoy both.

+1 to this
Thanks I was thinking about that as well. I gotta thank Wil Wheaton and the show table top for seeing how it was played I was tempted to get it but wasn't sure about it cause some of the people I play D&D with said they played it and hated it (what do they know).

My DnD group loves it, but we're a pretty tactically minded bunch.
I will warn you that the TIE Advanced doesn't stack up great but don't let that spoil things for you. In all, the ships are very well balanced!
If you really like it and decide to get more I recommends the Falcon and slave
Both great ships that comes with great upgrades.

That was a fun video, but ironically they did quite a few things wrong in it!
If your gonna use the advanced use vader, with a focus and an evade every turn he can be hard to take out.

Those two ships are my next ones on my list
Welcome to the addiction. It is like glitterstim. Definitely need to convert you to the Empire (if you aren't already).

Weirdest part was how they used the boost action...
First and foremost welcome to a great game.
Second I tell everyone as a new player and Monies are not an option buy one of each ship. You will learn what you like and what you don't.
Third there are a ton of excellent resources within this forum everything from storing ships to where to buy online and local.
Last the community for x-wing is much better then most table top games I super enjoy it
Well we just finished up playing and I am sad to say my son kicked my butt we played the senator escort mission and he got it to the finished line with 1 hull left,he took out one of my tie fighters and knocked vader's shields out. We made a bunch of mistakes but thats ok it was a learning process (not using focuses, reading the dice wrong and not using target locks when in range). but we had fun and he likes this better than EotE which we started to play a few weeks ago.
Is there a quick reference guide for which dice beats which and what each do,the book doesn't go to much into detail.

???
If you're just looking at your basic attacks it is pretty easy. Explosions (filled and unfilled) are rolled using Red Dice. Thing may change some of the dice but once they are done the Target Rolls Green Dice and is looking for Squiggly lines after all changes are made. Squiggly line on green dice (and the Evade Token with the squiggly line) can then be used to cancel out Explosions starting with the filled then going to the unfilled.
X-Wing only has two kinds of dice. You have the RED dice which are often called Attack Dice and the Green Dice which are often called Defense Dice. I just went over the basic attack scenario but there are other things which use these dice but those things should tell you what to roll and how to read the result.
I like the game but my son is kicking my butt he is using an x-wing and a B-wing to destroy my 2 tie fighters and tie advanced. just curious how many upgrade cards can you use at one time when attacking? Cause it seems he is hitting me with a lot at once I have a feeling we are doing something wrong. the kid is 3-0

Depends on the upgrades.
You can only preform one action with each ship per turn. So you can Focus or Target Lock, or Barrel roll, but generally speaking you can't do more then one. Unless you equip a Push the Limit elite pilot talent, but that costs points and causes the ship to become stressed.
If you can describe what he's doing we can tell you if it's ok or not.
Also when you're playing do you focus your fire on one target at a time, or do you try to spread it out? In this game you really want to focus on one target at a time when possible.
A X-Wing with 2 damage cards is just as deadly as one with 2 shields.
with his bwing he is hitting me with his autoblaster and proton torpedos I have tried to take him on ship to ship vader vs bwing and an tie fighter vs xwing and have my other tie go after the senator's shuttle
with his bwing he is hitting me with his autoblaster and proton torpedos
You can only fire 1 weapon per turn, is he shooting you with both? If so that's not how it works.
I don't play missions much, but I'd recommend everyone going after the X-wing first, then you can split your forces if you think you need to.
I don't know what upgrades you have, but it sounds like a bit of a miss match to me.
You have a Tie Advanced, which is not a great ship, going up against a B-Wing which is, that has a Autoblaster and Proton Torp. That's a bad match up for the imps.
A single Tie is never a good match for a X-Wing, you want at least 2 ties per X if possible.
Now I see where we messed up.We also play 1 hit =1pt of damage I have a feeling we are doing this wrong. I have been watching some videos and they mention pilot points and buying in forgive my noobness what does all that mean?

At the risk of sounding like a jerk (and I REALLY don't mean to), you probably want to go through the advanced rule book a few more (not the quick-start rules) times. It really does explain these concepts better than we could.
oh I plan too
