First tournament tomorrow... list advice.

Hi,

Playing in my first tournament tomorrow, which will be one of my first proper games too...

Need help coming up with a competitive list.

So far I have

Soontir Fel + Royal Guard Tie + Stealth Device + Shield upgrade

Avenger Squadron Pilot

Howlrunner + Veteran Instincts + Stealth Device

Academy Pilot

Acedemy Pilot

(Limited on choice of ships to 3 Interceptors, 4 ties, 1 bomber, 1 advanced and 1 firespray)

Ideas? Advice?

An Interceptor and mini-swarm isn't a bad idea, but I would tweak your list just a hair. Howl is a force multiplier, so every ship you pair her with increases the value of her pilot ability. Since I'm loathe to field less than three other TIEs in formation with her, I'd probably swap out the Avenger Squadron Pilot for another Academy Pilot. I'd also trade Veteran Instincts for Swarm Tactics, to get a little more value out of your basic TIEs before they inevitably get zapped. Finally, you really want a stress inducer on Fel to make the best use of his ability, so either Opportunist or Push the Limit would work. My personal preference would be something like this:

27 Soontir Fel

3 Hull Upgrade or Stealth Device

3 Push the Limit

18 Howlrunner

3 Hull Upgrade or Stealth Device

2 Swarm Tactics

17 Mauler Mithel

2 Swarm Tactics

12 Academy Pilot x2

There's one point leftover, so you can bid for initiative or swap Push the Limit for Opportunist. I think the former is a safer bet, so I'd stick with that.

Why put VI on Howlrunner?

Soontir Fel likes stress yet you don't have an easy way to put it on him. PtL seems to be the prefered method but I'm not sure if you have it or not. Are those 3 Interceptors Expansion + Aces? If so then PtL Fel or change him for some Interceptor that doesn't actually benefit from stress. I could easily see using Jax or Turr instead.

My thought:

Fel + PtL + Stealth Device

Royal Guard Pilot + PtL

Howlrunner

Academy Pilot (x2)

If I could have I would have traded the second Interceptor for TWO TIE Fighters but you don't have five of them to field.

I'm assuming you don't have access to multiple Alpha Squadron Pilot cards, otherwise you can make a nice (and gutsy) list with 4 TIEs and 2 Interceptors, it has shown up a couple times in various forms early in Regionals.

Gah! Yes, should have said the 3 interceptors include the aces pack.

I have 4 Academy Tie cards.

Push the limit makes a lot of sense - I should have thought of that!

That's a good list. A Bounty Hunter also costs exactly the same as Fel as he is set up. Hull Upgrade is less risk than Stealth Device, and comes in your Imperial Aces pack.

I know we're not quite there yet, but when Wave 4 hits the answer to the question "Why put Veteran Instincts on Howlrunner" is "Whisper/Echo with Veteran Instincts". My two cents, anyway.

Since you said you have Aces, I'd like to throw out Soontir + Targeting Comp + PtL.
That way, he can boost or evade, depending on the situation, and still get a TL+Focus attack, which is very scary

Choose hull upgrade over stealth. The flew three amigos straight for almost a year. The only time that 4 evade dice comes in handy Is when they get a range one shot at you and if your flying right they shouldn't :)

I put the Stealth Device on Fel because that is one of the two modifications Myranda had on it. Stealth is a risk but with a Focus I was giving it the benefit of the doubt although overall I'd agree that Hull is a more reliable Upgrade.

Had 1 ship survived in my third game I'd have come second (with a chance to play for over all winner)

And as it was an Assault on Imdaar (yes, it's late, but our FLGS only got their pack after the date listed on the FFG site) I got a free Tie Defender.

So thanks for the advice, I think the tweaks really helped.

First two games were double falcon lists, then a swarm with one interceptor at the end. Second falcon player couldn't seem to miss - the number of hits and crits per roll just seemed unpossible!

Also, at least part of my winning-ness was thanks to a totally minor mistake by an opponent - one of the two falcons in the first game missed the board. They chose a soft bank, rather than a hard turn and so ended up half off the board... So I had Soontir, Howl runner, two ties and a tie interceptor to take down one Falcon.

No matter how much I asked the second player didn't seem interested in flying off the board... some massively miss judged moves flew several ships through asteroids (a tie and Soontir died at the hands of asteroids :-( )

The third game - against a list which wasn't totally different to my own got really really tense and close.

The royal guard having 6 PS saved my bacon several times in against the Tie (almost) swarm of 4 ties 1 howl and 1 Interceptor.

Really saw the error in not taking a targeting computer for Soontir quite early on.
