Imperial Swarm (Interceptor version)

So a couple of us were kicking around a variation on TIE swarm using interceptors. We came up with the following :

4 x Alpha Squadron Pilots

1 x Carnor Jax

The point for interpretation is the remaining 2 pts in a 100 pts list. Would Swarm Tactics be more appropriate than Squad Leader or would something crazy be more interesting like a Targeting Computer?

Too fragile in my opinion, plus Howlrunner is what makes swarm good. And Carnor Jax will die fast and hes 25% of your points.

Though if you wanna run a swarm with Jax, I'd HIGHLY recommend:

Carnor Jax + PTL

Howlrunner + Swarm Tactics

3x Obsidian Tie

Academy Tie

Or some variation to up the ship count to 6 and possibly Include Howlrunner.

Or maybe, to keep with YOUR list idea, swap out one of the Alphas for Howlrunner! She greatly helps damage output, after all.

Yea, the crappy part is that you have 6 less hull than a swarm, and carnor won't get PTL which will mean he has to choose between positioning and survival which is a tough call for the leader of your crew. Having howl instead of an alpha may help as it would also take some aggro from carnor. But squints without PTL is a sin.

Not sure if that will work for you or not, but there are some nice regional lists that mix the two. I had fun with a list that included. Turr with PTL, Howl with Swarm, 2xAlphas, and Backstabber.

If you want to stick with five interceptors, than I'd drop Jax for Turr/Cowall both of whom you could put PTL on for more survivability. Without PTL Jax will be in trouble in that list. Alternatively, you could just throw in another Alpha and give three hull upgrades..

The problem I've made is swarms are about focused fire and rolling lots of attack dice (first<if using howl runner>) the problem with interceptors is that they're slightly more expensive so you can't run as many so you can't destroy as much which hurts when your already trying to destroy more points than the average swarm. That coupled with interceptors are better flying in small groups outside of firing arcs and that's very hard to do while still formation flying.

I'm with Alex here, you would be better to switch Jax for Turr with PtL. I love Jax, but here he will die very early since he's the bigger threat and don't have much to protect himself. Make the 4 alpha fly together while you flank with Turr.

Alternatively, you could mix them with Tie Fighter.

I'd rather have 3 dice than 2 dice with half a target lock.

This way I can score 3 hits. Most Rebel ships have only 1-2 evade dice, with the A-wing being the exception. I'd rather roll 3 dice, and be more likely to get damage through, than take lots of weak shots that are easier to avoid.

Jax w/ PTL and Stealth

Howlrunner w/ Swarm Tactics

4x Academy Ties.

Most of it comes down to being able to fly it well. If you can get a great alpha strike and then avoid bumps the majority of the game to take focus/evades, then you'll be laughing.

Nice team, but I think there is not enough Interceptor to be considered a Interceptor swarm version.

What about:

Omicron with Engine & AS

4x Alpha

Slow play the interceptors while the shuttle rushes up the edge to flank. The opponent has to either let the shuttle go, let 4 interceptors rush in as flankers if they chase it, or divide their fire.

Here's my howling for blood list.

Howl, swarm

Mauler, swarm

2 alpha interceptors

Royal guard, ptl.

While only 3 interceptors, mauler shoots like 1 at range 1, and you can shoot at 8,8,7,7,6 if you desire.

I'd have loved to fit in a 4th interceptor, but the low ps worried me.

Or you could try out 5 avenger interceptors :D

The real question about running a Interceptor Swarm is:

Do you prefer 4 Alpha or 3 Saber Squadron with PtL?

Do you prefer 5 Avenger or 4 RG + PtL?

I personally believe that PtL help so much to raise the efficiency of Interceptors that you are better to take one less ship and give the EPT to the others. It's doable for sure, but I think the Swarm is better left for the Tie Fighter and the Interceptor should more have a Wolfpack mentality. You turn around your preys and wait, attack the weak, then return to turn around until the new weakness appear.
