Echo and Whisper. Where from?

By Rogue Dakotan, in X-Wing

I couldn't find these two on Wookieepedia.

Did FFG make up these names for these pilots?

That seems to be the case. They aren't even really names, but "Callsigns."

There's nothing out there for either callsign, and no names listed. So it seems that FFG did make them up. They're the first 'named' pilots that FFG has made up I believe.

I don't have a problem with this. It's just interesting. :)

I see people referring to these pilots as "she" and "her". Is there any reason for this?

I feel the names should be pronounced like this: " Whisper " and "Echo Echo Echo Echo ". EVERY TIME YOU SAY THEM. haha.

Pour one out for Echo and Whisper, cats the FFG team owned who got run over by cars during development of the wave.

I thought their cat's names were Cheech and Chong?

One of the, I think echo, was identified in the preview article as a he, but there is a female Greek mythological figure named echo that has some people stuck on "she".

Whisper is entirely unknown, however.

(Or I got that backwards, but I don't think I did).

In my head Cannon, both Echo and Whisper are women. My head cannon trumps FFG, so let it be written, let it be done.

Cool! In my head canon Leia wears that gold bikini in all the movies.

Ouch. That must hurt when it goes off. The recoil could cause brain damage I'd think.

Oh, you mean canon

This is just a joke, do not be offended by it.

...sent here by the chosen onnne....

so let it be written....so let it be done....to kill the first born pharo's sonnnnn.

I'm creeping death.

oh, this isnt a sing-along?

You got it right, in the one article it refers to Echo as a male, saying He does this. Whisper's gender on the other hand is schrodinger's cat. ;)

On a side note, this very idea of "head canon" is more then a bit of a oxymoron. Because the whole concept of Canon is that it's not subject to opinion or choice, it just is. So to say 'your canon' as if it's different then everyone else's really doesn't work because it is no longer canon. It's like saying 'in my head canon Luke was killed by Darth Vader on Bespin.' You're effectively rejecting reality (such as it is) for your own version of events.

FFG has set the gender of Echo to male, so if someone wants to refer to him as a her, they'll either sound clueless or just delusional.

Well given that phantoms were made up for rebel assault II is it surprising there isnt all that much lore around them?

... they'll either sound clueless or just delusional.

I feel like you could probably already say that about some people here. If the shoe fits...

echo sounds for me manlier and whisper is something that sounds more feminin to me. but i like the idea of made up pilots that give us such cool abilities !! want moar of em *_*

I'm not adverse to being considered delusional. The reality is their gender doesn't matter, and it is unlikely anyone will notice or be confused when I refer to Echo as 'she'. Usually, we would just refer to the pilot as their name when playing.

Also, nobody playing a game with me will criticize it because I'll be wearing a low cut top.

There are more than enough boys piloting starships. It's silly to argue against calling a newly created, non Canon character female. Maybe FFG made a typo. ;)

I always appreciate head canon, whether it be lady pilots, dead vader, or permanent gold bikinis. It's called imagination and individuality.

Brrr

What about the new movies?

You know, I think I'd like to see them worked into the canon now. maybe if they made a few comics about them. Then we could welcome them into part of the EU, and also get some awesome comics out of it!

You know, I think I disagree with you on this. Canon only defines the "reality" of a setting because it is what someone has said is real. It is entirely possible to have multiple, different levels and types of canon decreed by different people. So from that point of view it is entirely possible for each individual to have their own "canon". It kinda defeats the purpose of the concept, but canon only has authority because we give that authority to someone, if someone wants to have a different version of the universe that is "official" to an audience of 1 (them self), then it seems like "head-canon" is a perfectly reasonable name for it.

Just some idle semantic philosophy.

I don't tend to make assumptions either way, but wearing a low cut top would be distracting whether you're a guy or girl.

I want a head cannon!!! And arm shotguns and leg swords!

I feel like there was already a character like that, in one of the bounty hunter novels.

Their names are code words interchangeable between different pilots. Whenever Phantoms are sent on covert missions, the leader is "Whisper" and the subordinate is "Echo". Five men and three women have held both titles over the service of the phantom, ironically both surviving the destruction of Imdaar Alpha as they were on deployment during the time Rookie one attacked the base.

That's my head canon :P
