Picking squad for first tournament

By Fryn, in X-Wing

Hey all

I'm going to my first tournament tomorrow (non ffg support) and there will be at least one phantom. As I have no wave 4, I need to make sure my bases are covered.

I'm leading towards one of the following:

Squad 1 (99)

chewie 42

title 1

C3PO 3

PTL 3

Lando 44

VI 1

gunner 5

Squad 2 (99)

Wes Janson 29

VI 1

r2 astro 1

Ten Numb 31

marksman 3

Ibtisam 28

FCS 2

Opportunist 4

Are there any major flaws with these builds?

First is 26 hp with 6 attack, while second is 21 hp with 9-10 attack

With Lando and Chewie is it worth swapping PTL for DTF?

Questions to answer

What ships do you know the best?

What are you most comfortable playing?

Best piece of advice, take the list you are most comfortable with and have played the most

Don't let people on a forum sway your opinion into changing your list, that will only cause you to make mistakes by forgetting stuff during the tournament that you could possibly do since you aren't as familiar with the list

On the first list, I'd swap PTL and VI on the two ships. This puts both Chewy and Lando at PS7, allowing them to move in any order. Furthermore, Lando is getting a second action via PTL (and then doing a green to clear his stress, which grants Chewy a second action). Then with that, I'd probably put the defensive upgrades (C3P0, Title) on Lando, along with Nien Nunb. Then I suppose you could put Gunner on Chewy..

For the second list, I would think EU would be a good use on Wes, so you can adjust your movements at PS10 based on what the phantom did (assuming you're doing this to hunt down the phantom). I'm not too sure I like that list for hunting Phantoms in general though... so I can't really think of a quick switch or two to make it more effective.

like the others said its better to use ships u flown most and know how to react to some sort of actions and its everytime a bad idea to just try something out in a touarnement itself so do alot of playtesting before u go into the flames of hell ;P

Definitely put Gunner on Chewie as he should stick around longer.

I definitely like Khyros's suggestions on what to do with the dual Falcons. I suspect you have VI + Gunner on Lando so he can shoot at PS9 before any hypothetical Phantoms can recloak but you'll need to see Phantoms first, Gunner could be overkill against an uncloaked Phantom, and it can also complicate your movement. Mostly switching around the upgrades (I'd maybe leave C-3PO on Chewie) gets both ships moving at the same PS which gives you options you may not have otherwise. Going at PS 7 may mean shooting at cloaked Phantoms but that's where Gunner comes back into play.

I know I'm not all that comfortable with that XBB squadron. I look at it and think "why not get everyone at PS 8" although it seems you're very worried about what a PS 9 Phantom (and maybe Interceptor) could do to you.

The advice to "play what you're comfortable with" may be VERY important here when both of these squads will need to be flown well as you don't have the numbers to make mistakes. I also think you may be letting the threat of a Phantom throw your game which means they are already one step closer to defeating you.

Like the above, take the list you're more comfortable with. I'd also mention that I don't think its worth changing your list to metagame against 1 ship in one guys squad unless you know you'll be facing it more than once for sure based on turnout. To boot, he may not even take IV and you already have the turret...so you should be safe anyway.
