Sanity Check Over Specialization Skills

By Seiito, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I keep reading over the description for Heightened Awareness and it says:

"Allies in close range add (Boost) to Perception or Vigilance checks. Engaged allies add (2 Boost)."

Does that mean that they add the blue to me or that I add the blue to them? Thus far we've been playing the latter.

Also feel free to get added utility out of this topic by asking your own questions about specific specialization skills.

Everyone adds a boost to their own rolls. If they are engaged with you, they add 2. You are also considered to be an ally to yourself, so you would get 2 boosts of your own, as you are technically engaged to yourself (which is legal in several galactic systems and gaining in popularity). :D

To put it another way, you are a beacon of free boosts (for those skills). You don't have to do anything to have everyone benefit. You are so awesome that merely having you around makes everyone better.

Latter is RAW.

do you add (2 Boost) to your own checks even when there isn't an ally within close or engaged range then?

What if I'm secretly working against myself? Do I count as my own ally then?

(Bounty should be looking pretty good by now.)

Slap yourself around and ask hard questions, it's the only way to get to the bottom of it..............

It's no good, chief. This idiot doesn't know anything.

This looks suspicious. I think I may be on to me.

Trust no one.......and use a mirror when you're looking over your shoulder to look for that guy watching you.........

When I do that I keep seeing this suspicious looking guy with crazy eyes. [concerned whispering] He's everywhere.

He's always one step ahead of and/or behind me.

Stop the thread!

It's getting silly.

Back on topic, I'd say you don't add boosts to yourself, because you don't count as an ally, you count as yourself. The questions about adding dice if no one is around you makes the point clear, because you don't add dice to yourself at all times.

I think there is an implied "their" in the talent description:

"Allies in close range add (Boost) to [their] Perception or Vigilance checks. Engaged allies add (2 Boost)."

I don't think it works as well with an implied "your":

"Allies in close range add (Boost) to [your] Perception or Vigilance checks. Engaged allies add (2 Boost)."

you don't count as an ally

Proven fact.

I think it's worth pointing that at times there is what I think the RAW says. It doesn't mean I agree with the RAW. Some of the questions I've submitted rules questions on I haven't agreed with the answers and have chose to ignore the 'official' interpretation.

This Talent makes me think the player with it acts as the point man drawing fire, or the canary in the mine or something...

It was officially answered that you do count as your own ally.

Where and when?

Btw, now that I'm with my book, if you look on p136 of the Core, in the Talents chapter, it specifically states "add Boost their P&V checks." I think of it narratively as your own awareness of the situation being able to point things out and act as a second pair of eyes/ears to everyone nearby.

Yeah, I need to remember to check that chapter for clarification more often...
