Double Phantom

By Bathickey, in X-Wing

After reading the 'how to phantom article' I was inspired to build the following two double phantom lists--both in my mind screamingly obvious in intention and similarity (besides an excuse to make fart jokes). Both super aggressive lists are just riffs on each other.

Sounds/Fury list 100pts

Echo +VI+SPA (33 pts)

Whisper +VI+SPA (35 pts)

Mauler Mithel (17 pts)

Winged Gundark (15 pts)

Phantoms/Farter 100pts

Echo +VI+SPA (33 pts)

Whisper +VI+SPA (35 pts)

Captain Jonus + Proton torpedos + Assault missiles + Determination (32 pts)

Both lists present non-phantom ships that just jam right into the opposing squad however you can manage while the phantoms get into position and cause a real catch 22 of threat assessment. Anyone wanna help me theory craft towards improving a list like these?

no one likes fart jokes?

Everyone likes fart jokes. If they claim otherwise they are lying. In any case, the lists. Why SPA instead of advanced cloak? You have already outfitted your phantoms with VI so they should benefit more from the instant cloak instead of some evade tokens.

Not a big fan of either of those.

The SPA is interesting but will leave the Phantoms UNCLOAKED. Sure, an Evade token can save one point of damage which is slightly better that two unfocused Defense dice but that's only against a single attack. The reasons you often want VI on the Phantoms are two parts: one is so you know where your opponent is so you can move to the right space when you decloak but the second reason is so that you can attack before your opponents start shooting back at you allowing you to utilize the Advanced Cloaking Device. With the SPA you neuter that second reason as you're still visible. What's more is that you'd need to wait until you get an action again before you can start any of the cloaking shenanigans.

For 32 points I'd split TIE Fighters into the 16 point duo of Backstabber and Dark Curse. Both PS 6 bodies (which can also play nice with the phantom's PS) with one providing more punch and the other being harder to hit. I don't think I'd touch that version of Jonus in anything. SO many points behind 6 points of hull and no one to benefit from his wonderful ability. If you want to spend 32 points on a single TIE Bomber I'd think about trying Rymer with VI + Flechette Torps (x2) + Munitions Failsafe; the idea behind him is actually to help counter other Phantoms with his high PS and ability to stress out ships at any range.

oh snap, that sort of totally ruins my idea by putting both lists 4 points over, that SPA is supposed to be the advanced cloaking...

Why jonus with 2 phantoms? His ability goes to waste, you only get rerolls on other ships' secondary weapons...

Throw out Jonus and add an interceptor, being that everyone is on their own.

Just FYI, if you move last/fire first, and you are not in firing arcs of anything... sometimes the best thing to do is not cloak with your ACD free cloak.

Id probably argue this if its Echo at least. His maneuver options mean that you can still plan to be where you want to be aiming, can avoid enemy K-Turns and if nothing else, you NEVER want your opponent to feel comfortable, knowing where you are going to be by just staying put.

well my list needs to be sorta redone, because those should be ACDs rather than SPA, but Jonus is there even though is ability goes to waste because he's the cheapest tankiest thing out there you can double load ordinance on while giving determination--the idea is that he can hit the HSF lists and take out solo small based turrets and then just sorta die nbd.

Probably need to agree with Sonikgav there. With Whisper if you're not in any arcs all recloaking does is give you the ability to make an extreme move left, right, or forward which you may not want to do next turn; it also makes his free Focus rather useless but so what. Perhaps the only danger there is if Cracken makes an attack and gives one of his Rebel buddies a boost or roll that suddenly puts the Phantom in that ship's sights. With Echo you just have SO MANY movement option available when you decloak that not taking advantage of them is almost criminal.
