Reusing Pilots: Provide more options and "fixes"

By Rakky Wistol, in X-Wing

Besides crew and pilots, no one in the game has appeared across multiple ships or as different versions of themselves. Many other minis games do this and it would be easy to apply to Xwing.

I'll start with Vader since he seems to cover a lot of ground.

Old: Darth Vader: As is tie Advanced Pilot, represents the "basic" Vader.

New: Darth Vader, Sith Lord: Still flying the advanced, new pilot ability (Maybe something force related) could "recost" him to be more in line with newer models.

Benefit: we get a "new" pilot, we get another pilot for an unused ship, we get a point fix for a ship that needs it. Vader is a bigger bad Azz than currently depicted in the game.

Bonus: if we ever get clone wars we could get, Darth Vader, sith apprentice and even Anakin Skywalker.

Ok.

What other pilots could ship hop, deserve a better ship, deserve a different ship, or deserve a powered up/down version of themself? Mr. Steele is one people also clamor for (shocking that he also happens to be seated in a tie advanced).

Luke Skywalker, rookie starfighter (AKA lucky newb): PS3, You may reroll 1 dice from any torpedo attack

Boba Fet, Bounty Hunter: Before you reveal your first manuver, gain a TL on any one enemy craft. While you have a TL you may reroll 1 att vs that ship or one evade vs. that ships attacks.

Tycho, Academy Pilot: Tie Fighter!

Tycho the defector: Xwing!

Tycho flew a lot of ships. Before Aces I would say he needed a boost, I think he'll be ok now but he also provides a lot of easy port overs.

Only issue with this, is how do they get these pilots to us?

It would have to be either via a card pack of some sort, or another aces box.

I am ok with either or both.

Yeah but how many X-Wings does someone really need? I currently have 6, I'd rather not end up with 24 of them because they release a new aces pack with 2 X-Wings every 6 months...

But a simple card pack has issues of it's own, so that may not work for them.

I assume we'll get cardpacks at some point if this game continues to grow and last...people just aren't going to buy that 23rd and 24th xwing... especially if the "repaint" differences and quality are the same as the Tantive... that was pathetic.

As for other ships... only 3 have the "aces" treatment so far and if we have a "core set", we could also see and "advanced set" or such... who knows. But I think the idea has merit.

This is not a Attack Wing forum...

I like how people constantly try their hand at fixing this game by proposing stuff that completely flies in the face of the core game structure. Its like people haven't worked out that this game has a limited lifespan like every other FFG game.

Yup, those LCG's have a completely limited lifespan not in anyway related to sales. Or essentially reusing the RPG with cosmetic makeovers.

This game will continue as long as it is selling. I'm fine with pilots appearing in other ships with different abilities. But, I'm not too interested in the same pilots in the same ship with a different ability. Especially when some of them are perfectly fine as they are.

Bonus: if we ever get clone wars we could get, Darth Vader, sith apprentice and even Anakin Skywalker.

*shudder*

You say that like it's a good thing.

Pretty much. The only difference is that miniature games have higher overheads than LCGs so the break even threshold for sales is going to be higher. I'm not saying that it will happen tomorrow or even in 5 years time but this game is structured so that it can be abandoned pretty quickly once it falls below the break even point or they find a more lucrative use for the license. Or if Disney decides to play hardball. And these are considerations that are completely removed from the player base.

Remember Warhammer:Invasion?

I suspect that if sales start to drop below a minimum level, that that is when we will start to see card packs without ships. Just cards would be much cheaper to produce and could work to continue keeping the game dynamic without new models. At least for a while.

It's not a balance thing, but I really want to see Han in a Z-95.

Nah if their previous behavior is anything to go by we will see a Revised Version of the core set with all new pilots and upgrades in about a year or so. Probably to coincide with the release of the new movies so that they can use those assets

Revised editions of the pre-existing ships to follow ... probably encompassing waves 1-3.

'Classic' card packs to be released soon after

Back on topic, I personally wouldn't mind seeing Maarek Stele or Keyan Farlander pop up again (well, not so much as 'again' for Farlander as he hasn't been officially released yet but you know what I mean). I always considered those characters to be 'me' due to the X-Wing/Tie Fighter PC games and you got to pilot pretty much every fighter in the game.

Also, I personally wouldn't mind seeing re-release of existing ships with new paint jobs and cards but that's because I don't have a lot right now.

yeah give me my **** marek stele in a tie interceptor and any other tie variant cause he flew em all more than once ;P. and forcing him to fly the advance is just slappin him in the face ;O

Edit: his most favored and where he become the marek stele we know was the tie advanced x2 tie avanger where he was known for firing proton rockets in point blank range at huge ships and i can see his ability triggering only in that ship with those explosives were the strongest projectiles iver read.

How many revised products has FFG even done? Three now? Descent, Battlelore, and Dungeonquest? I can't think of many others save for relaunching beloved old products from other companies to give them new life. Heck, even Battlelore's relaunch is just to solve the cost issue, they stated early on after obtaining the game that continuing to produce it wasn't really financially possible, and they'd need to redo it to make it cost effective.

I think expanding on the current system is more likely, issues with new products without forcing us to buy more minis. I've debated the "new pilots for old ships" issues as well. Card packs could work, but is... odd, and possibly off-putting.

They did a revised starter for Dust Tactics before selling the rights. That starter had different starter units for the two factions (also less models) and was aimed both at expanding the current game + getting new players into it.

And by card pack I don't mean randomized! Forgot to put that in there. Xwing packs with all the generics (and cardboard bases) and a few more aces would do. Copy of a well used mod. Maybe one new mod. People would pay 15-20 for em especially if they had some new art. Cheaper than plastic and packaging and people would still pay the same.

Only issue with this, is how do they get these pilots to us?

It would have to be either via a card pack of some sort, or another aces box.

How about a mail in with five proof or purchase "special edition cardpack".
