Selfmade Conversion of Sees of Blood Campaign

By SonicStyleAdventures, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi!

My Herogrp and I just played now all of the Campaign released so far. Nice Quests and Expansions but it gets a Little bit boring, because you know the Quests and the tactics to win them. So we got an idea we want to convert the old Sees of Blood Campaign into the 2nd Edition. I dont know if that would work. So lets Brainstorming... what do you guys think about this idea?

First, please understand that my response should not throw cold water on your idea. If you want to do it, go for it. Get creative, generate a campaign, and have fun.

Having said that ... :P ...

If you are talking about Sea of Blood from Descent First Edition, I will ask the question WHY?

That was THE MOST EFFED up expansion for first edition and it wasn't even close. The amount of whining, complaining, FAQs, GLOAQs, etc. that were generated by that expansion lead all of us to believe that the reason that FFG, Kevin Wilson and gang gave up on First Edition was due to the disaster known as Sea of Blood.

That expansion was basically unplayable. Where other expansions to Descent First Edition showed a distinct lack of play testing, SoB raised it to a whole other level.

I think you would be better off, with time better spent, simply using your group's creativity and generate a completely new campaign.

In addition, if you are tired of FFG's own expansions, look at some of the quests/campaigns in the custom vault. You could have fun playing those (and helping the creators to play test them as well), without having to spend your own time generating something.

Just my 2 cents worth (which is probably worth only about $0.00000671 cents).

I haven't played Sea of Blood, so I don't know much about converting it. So while this post may not be the most helpful, along the lines of looking for other campaigns, you may want to look up The Silken Thread (I believe it's posted on BGG). It was a custom campaign someone made.

Either way, best of luck in your conversion. Apologies if this post isn't exactly what you're looking for.

^^ This !

The Silken Threads was a very well done custom campaign. I actually spent the time to print it all out, generate all of the cards for the game etc.

I agree that Sea of Blood was pretty messed up, rules-wise. I'm not sure that it single-handedly killed D1E, though. I think people knew there were some serious issues with the 1E mechanics, particularly the campaign system, which is what everyone wanted but not originally what the core mechanics were designed for. Things had been eroding for a long time, and SoB was just the straw that broke the camel's back, so to speak. Hence D2E, with streamlined rules and a built in campaign from square one, etc, etc. You guys know the spiel, I'm sure.

Converting SoB to D2E could be seen as a chance to rewrite the rules in a way that works and make it the swashbuckling adventure we all wanted it to be. Someone has already made an attempt at converting Road to Legend into D2E rules. I would start by looking at that project and thinking of ways to extend the idea to SoB.

I highly recommend Silken Threads. I think it's brilliant. As for converting Sea of Blood.... I might suggest using the story lines and overall theme for inspiration only, but don't attempt it as a straight-up "conversion", per se. I think that would be hugely problematical. Certainly you could "borrow" a great deal from it, but it would probably work better to totally re-do it from scratch in the Descent Second Edition format as opposed to attempting to keep it intact and "convert" it. Just my one cent worth.

yes, I do think that remaking it is a better idea than trying uslessly do convert it.

Just keep the ambiance, ideas, and theme, but forget the rest.

SoB was an awesome idea implemented so terribly that many in here dare not speak its name. It's like the Anakin Skywalker of Descent.

If you think you can wrangle the concepts into something that will work in D2E, be my guest. But know this: once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny.

It would be very difficult to do without large water tiles. However, I could see (disclaimer, I have not played Seas of Blood) creating a campaign or mini campaign where each "quest" is on an island. The overall map could be a sea, and you'd need to have an exclusive travel deck (much like FFG created for Shadows of Nerekhall.) That's the beauty of the quest vault. You'd just need the artwork and travel decks to be created separately.

That's would be really cool ! I wish to see what that could be when finished and ready to be tested
