Can we please stop calling overlapping, bumping and colliding?

Ok. I not the best english major and don't claim to be.

This really is starting to annoy me.

Everyone calls it bumping or Colliding, instead of overlapping. I heard the bump word over 30 times at my last tournament.

The fluff of overlapping is that both ships are so close they cannot get actions, because they are simply to busy trying to avoid hitting each other. This could mean they are ontop of each other, or very close. They are not bumping or colliding. If this were the case they would both take damage, and it is not the case.

Believe me, when flying fighters and yes I have some experience, there are many times when being to close is bad, but bumping is much worse.

I know everyone has latched on top bumping as a term, but you really are not bumping you are overlapping.

That's my rant for today.

Yeah, being close to another can be as bad as a colission, just ask Goose.

Don't care about the wording, the important thing is to understand what other players mean, isn't it ? ;)

It's a casual term. Relax. It's not a big deal.

The problem is ships never actually overlap, so what people actually see is likely to kick in, since those words better describe what they see happening, which is how language works.

When I say "bump", it's because that's what the bases are doing. It's a handy piece of jargon because, by convention, it carries the same meaning as "overlapping" does in a quarter of the syllables and in 4 characters instead of 11 (important on Vassal ).

And while I'm not a fighter pilot (the Air Force ROTC recruiter I talked to in my late teens very politely told me that the intelligence guys would love to have me, but the bottle glasses more-or-less ruled out the fast fun stuff), I'm pretty sure "overlapping" another aircraft at typical operational velocities isn't actually any better than "bumping" one...

How about the words/phrases: Getting into a Tussle, Tied Up, Invading my Space, Grappling, Too Close for Comfort, Stocking, Bear Hug, etc...

Yeah, I agree bumping is the most unrealistic moment in this otherwise totaly realistic game!

Two words for you:

Fly Casual.

Yeah, still using the slang. This is a game, it picks up terms and slang over the course of time. In all reality this should help you learn pieces of the language. English's greatest advantage artistically is the number of different words it has for the same thing. Without that synonym diversity books, music, and poetry all get really repetitive.

However imo bumping/collisions is the term I would describe the ships final position, as more the bases are technically touching. Hence bump/collision.

They overlap yes,but they can't end their final movement in that position, so you back if up until they are touching.

Bumping/colliding makes it sound as though the ships actually did run into one another which they didn't in the game. But it does describe the final resting place of the ships

*fist bump* for the OP. I agree, its annoying but I understand why the nomenclature is used. The bases are bumping/touching and the term more accurately the state of the actual game rather than what it represents. I generally pay it no mind, but what gets me is when someone says something like "you're gonna smash into me" or "these two guys will crash". bumping/humping/touching..fine. crashing/smashing? come on!

And they're right, the bases don't overlap - hence why nobody uses that term. It's a three dimensional concept, put into 2d. I think if bumping like getting too close to somebody and needing to cover (climb or descend) a bit for some lateral separation.

But they're not crashing - they're getting really close, they need to focus on not hitting one another hence the loss if actions, but if they swapped paint they would roll for damage. Neither overlapping and bumping as terms work for what's happening. Overlapping is what is simulated in space time, but bumping is actually what happens for the in game mechanics. Hence why we should all say Bear Hug from now on.

Henceforth, we shall call it "KerPunk", after the sound 2 fictional spaceships would, theoratically, emit when they either attempt this maneuver or if they hit each other. In space.

Time to re-watch Star Wars Episode VI (Revenge of the Jedi) ... you know that scene where they are all approaching the new Death Star with massive amounts of ships from both sides seemingly flying through each other ...?

I will have to turn the sound up so I can hear all of the "KerPunks" !!! :P

Bump works in gaming terms just fine. I don't mind whether they call it after the physical or the fluff, it doesn't bother me (in the same way that you can call it an Incom T-65 instead of an X-Wing, or you can make whooshing noises as you move your ships. It's part of the fun!)

That's not that big of a deal either. Language slowly redefines itself. I mean, your britches aren't literally in a bunch, but people know what I mean when I say that.

There are metaphors, there's using words to mean new things, there's simplyfying, there's using language in interesting, creative, news ways, then there's just getting it wrong. I'm all for dynamic language, but that doesn't meant simply accepting mistakes as language fluidity.
