So, I decided to buck the trend last night and run an A-Wing build just for fun at the LGS. I've been stuck in the XXBB and Swarm meta and just wanted to do something different.
I ran this list:
Tycho / PTL
Ten Numb / FCS / HLC
Horton / ICT
I had it in my head that Horton would follow Ten and set him up with the Ion while Tycho did his stress dance all over the flanks.
The first squad I ran into was:
Soontir / PTL / Hull Upgrade / Targeting Computer
Turr / PTL / Hull Upgrade / Shield Upgrade
Carnor Jax / PTL / Hull Upgrade
We set up - (-o-) (-o-) (-o-)
O-=-o o-(o)-o <(o)>
I sent Tycho steaming across the board and met the two (my left) interceptors head on, scoring a few hits and dropping Ion on one of them. The B-Wing closed one out with HLC on turn 2, and Ion cannon plus Tycho closed the second.
Tycho had to make a sweeping counter clockwise turn to get back in the fight, at which time we happily made space debris from the remaining squint. However, Carnor Jax did some serious Y-Wing damage while the B-Wing was trying to come around, but a win is a win.
I played the same opponent for the next match, and he got a lot smarter about Tycho and the A-Wing lack of barrel roll.
(Tycho / PTL / Expert Handling / Test Pilot / Refit - So much win!)
Anyways, Tycho and Soontir were playing cat and mouse, and I will admit my inexperience with A-Wings allowed him to do some superior piloting.
Fel landed a range-three-through-an-asteroid prayer on Horton while chasing Tycho, putting him out, but the Horton Ion / Ten combo was already working and Ten killed Turr out of arc, the same turn Carnor killed Ten. A hit and run range three shot from Tycho who was green "five-ing" all over the board closed out Carnor Jax on the same turn that he finally took out Ten.
So now - the duel of the flankers. First things first - it's hard to get out of arc without barrel roll, but 5 green forward is nice with boost. Also, 1 speed turns on an A-Wing plus Boost is a nice maneuver to confuse someone. Twice I got out of arc, but getting behind an Interceptor is a challenge!
I eventually decided to try to run for it, and made a tight turn so that he would think I was bringing it around again and then slammed on the afterburners. We basically reset the board and came after each other again.
I tried to arc dance, but we traded range 3 shots and Tycho was down to one hit left and got popped.
Overall, I have to say, with PTL and Focus / Evade or even with just an evade, Tycho is hella durable compared to playing X's and B's. I feel like Tycho was in God-mode for half of the game. I have renewed my love for the A-Wing, and I cannot wait for the new rebel aces upgrades.
