I know I am supposed to love B-wings, but I just can't

By Hrathen, in X-Wing

The thing with B-Wings is that they are so reliable it makes everyone want to use them. The system slot makes them even more reliable at whatever it is you're looking for them to do.

You don't need to be lucky in rolling defense dice, it just tanks the hits. It puts out a good amount of firepower and is very maneuverable.

In a tournament setting, Dagger & Blue Squadron pilots are very much worth the points. You know what you're going to get out of them and taking them isn't risky.

Since most people play in tournament formats (even in pickup games) they see a lot of use.

I like b wings but I'm one of those people who don't use them alot because they're so popular and everyone sees them as good. I try to work in less popular ships like hwks and a wings.

Hipster. Not really, but in this game 90% of the less used stuff is still fully viable. That said, don't ahy away from popular ships either. Use everything you can. The game is brilliantly designed and incredibly fun.

B-Wing: Bank right 2 + Barrel roll left (forward as much as possible) is slightly faster than an X-Wing going forward 4. Keep that in mind next time you plan your alpha approach in a game.

This right here is just one example of their true maneuverability.

Their movement options are not as intuitive as the dial suggests, but that doesn't mean they have horrible options. I find that flown well, they are actually one of the least predictable ships.

I enjoy them, but they have their faults. The amount of available options can make them point sponges. I find their named pilots to be mediocre yet so expensive they almost mandate a 3 ship build. They are prime targets for all ordnance.

I definitely have some lists I use them in and I have some awesome ideas for epic play with b wings. I also love the look on someones face when you beat there 2x2b list with an xyhwk list lol.

Well my 2c.

I love the B-Wings, we are doing a local 2 day Tournament. First day already played and the second day at the end of the month (we meet once a month)

Here is the list I took:

Dagger Squadron Pilot (24)

ADV Sensors (3)

Ion Cannon (3)

Dagger Squadron Pilot (24)

ADV Sensors (3)

Ion Cannon (3)

Gold Squadron Pilot (18)
Flechette Torpedoes (2)
Gold Squadron Pilot (18)
Flechette Torpedoes (2)

This list was surprisingly durable, in my first two games I faced both Imperial lists. First game had 2 Tie Fighters (BS), Tie Advanced and a Bomber.

I lost a Y-Wing and was probably 1 turn away from taking out the TA which was on 2 health. With ADV sensors I was able to out maneuver my opponent.

Second game I ran into Krassis with HLC, a Sabre Interceptor and Darth. HLC is deadly esp against low agility targets. Again the durability of my ships won the day. My opponent learnt never joust and interceptor against B-Wings and Y-Wings I took the TI down in two turns,

Krassis had lost most shields and Darth Vader had a poor roll and in the final turn before time ran out Darth basically got 1-shotted (he had no shields, took evade and focus) rolled all blanks.

So I went 2-0 with major victories.

Third game I found the weakness is when facing another high durability list, game went to time (He has X-wing, 2 B's and ORS)

Although my opponent got a modified win (8pts difference) it was close.

So I am through to the Semi's with a 2-1

I think B-wings are a heavily used ship in the Rebels as every rebel build I saw had them, for 22 points (1 more than the standard X) I can see why a lot of people take them. There are many successful lists not using them.

My gut feeling is they are not for everyone, but they are a very heavily used ship in the rebel arsenal.

those list you fought don't look very good.

Hey man. If it isn't your thing.

I mean my favorite to fly is the HWK and more than one person will sneer at that because it's not an X-Wing, but eh.

No biggie. Fly what you want. Fly it well.

At the risk of sounding like a grammar nazi again (OK, semantics nazi this time), some of you are misunderstanding the word crutch. It doesn't have to be essential, to be a crutch, it just has to be something people fall back on when they run into trouble (or are worried).

Semazi? Semanazi?

Big reason I like b wings is that they're so effective against big ships, they don't need much maneuverability to keep after falcons etc and the three shots lets them lay down fire. But ya I'm not in love with them for chasing more maneuverable stuff.

After reading this thread, I decided to give the BWing a try in my list!

I went with Ten Numb with Advanced Sensors and was happy with how he worked with my two X Wings!

I lost the first game, mainly due to poor maneuvering on my part in Turn 3, which left one of my X Wings blown up and hardly any scratches on my opponents ships! I just couldn't recover from that!

The second game with identical set ups on both sides saw my force handily win with all hull intact and about a third of the shields between the three ships!

I think the B Wing will fit my build nicely and give it more maneuvering options than I had before! I never would have seen that without this discussion!

Thank you!
