Question on home made game board paints

By Krynn007, in X-Wing

Last night did my first attempt at making a game board. Watched some videos on you tube.

Looked easy enough.

Just bought mdf board and spray paint.

The board is not bad for a first attempt. Considering I did it outside in the eve and a getting eaten alive by mosquitos lol.

My question is today I was looking at it and ran my hand back and forth on it and notice my fingers had paint on them.

Though the paint is dry.

I was feeling along the board to see how smooth it felt and it did feel relatively smooth.

Though my fingers are now slightly stained

Im wondering is this common on this type of home made board?

I remember reading somewhere someone said they put a varnish on the board after they paint it.

Does that prevent from the paint staining your hands?

What type of varnish do you use if any?

Any other tips would be nice.

I used just a regular black and white, and for the other colors blue and red I used a gloss type

you probably just held the can too far away and some of the paint dried before it hit the board. Just wipe it with a lint free cloth and it'll be fine.

if you want to finish it (and make it more durable) the easiest way is to get some spray on polyurethane and give it a good 3-5 coats waiting for it to dry completely between.

varnish is nice and all but it's advantages are meaningless for mdf

Ok I have some clean rags in my garage.

I'll give it a wipe see how they does

I'll also look at picking up some polyurethane.

Think I'll do the other side and buy another 3 X 3 board and make anther one as well.

I enjoyed it. Plus want to do a better job.

Was doing it outside so I wasnt inside in a poor ventilated area. Was getting eaten alive by mosquitos so I rushed it a little and trying to fight them off while painting was rough.

I'll definitely do it again during the day when there's a lot less mosquitos
