Compatiblitiy

By MrsOestreich09, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hello everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone could answer a question for me. I have looked around and cannot seen to find the info to answer this properly so figured I would try here.

Is Star Wars Edge of The Empire compatible with 3.5 or Pathfinder?

Any info would be helpful!!
Thank you

No, they are entirely different, mechanically and thematically. The previous versions produced by Wizards of the Coast are a closer fit, for obvious reasons.

That said, my players have played 3.5, 4e, and WEGD6, and all seem to like EotE just fine, some actually prefer it, once they got used to how it worked.

Not even remotely.

FFG uses an entirely different system than the d20 mechanic.

There was a licenced game by WOC made back in about 2002-ish which was based sort of on the D20-Modern system in some ways. So it's mostly incompatible despite sharing some things your group would be familiar with.

Its not entirely 'terrible' either as there was some really fantastic source material written for it, but like most D20 games it tends to fall down at some point after a certain amount of levels/xp and lie on the ground drooling and mechanically broken. Which kind of sucked as I was GM at that point and couldn't continue.

Give this system a go

I can not tell you how happy I am that the answer is NO!!!

I don't know what 3.5 is and I am too lazy to look atm. :P I'm guessing, from the context of the messages in this thread, that it's similar to Pathfinder.... which I do know. I'm not saying those games are bad but they are simply unplayable for me. That would lead me to agree with Donovan Motningfire. Those games are not even the slightest bit compatible with the FFG Star Wars games.

That said, I would not be surprised if there's a conversion available in the resource sticky thread.

Very similar. As in, almost exactly the same.

If I may ask, what made it unplayable for you?

why would you need it to be? are you looking to play a pathfinder adventure using the mechanics of EotE or wanting to run a Star Wars campaign with the 3.5/Pathfinder(3.75) systems? someone may have made a conversion somewhere, but it will not have the same affect on you as the system that EotE employs, namely, a "cinematic narrative" style of RPG which focuses more on the story being created at the table than the tactics of range movements and results of multi-polyhedral rolls.

don't get me wrong. EotE uses its fun take on the multi-polys but unfortunately their results cannot directly be described through mathematics. EotE rolls must be interpreted narratively by the players in order to play and give shape to the world. you will not find a better mechanic out there that so easily lends itself to the primacy of story and fun above all else.

Edisung, a friend wanted me to find this info for him ... he is currently in the Pathfinder and/or the 3.5 system and had seen this new version and was curious if it was compatible. I honestly do not know anything about RPG, just trying to help a friend out.

Thank you everyone for the helpful information!

Pathfinder heavily relies on maps, miniatures and measuring (wow... totally unintended alliteration) and I'm blind. There really doesn't seem to be a way around it without major changes and then you might as well just play something different... which is what we ended up doing. My GM wanted to run EotE, anyway...

To be blunt, Pathfinder made me feel handicapped. EotE sets me free.

If your players are dead-set on playing Star Wars using a d20 system, you've got three options.

OCR - Original Core Rules, which was WotC's initial attempt. Very much a D&D clone, using 3.0 rules.

RCR - Revised Core Rules, a revision of the OCR. A number of improvements and tweaks, something of a predecessor to 3.5 edition of D&D.

Saga Edition - generally held to be the best of the Star Wars d20 games. This really is D&D 3.75th edition as opposed to Pathfinder really being more like 3.6th edition. There are a few quirks, namely where the feat Skill Focus comes into play given how skill checks scale in comparison to defense scores. The biggest complaint is that it is highly reliant on maps and minis, but this shouldn't be an issue for a group used to D&D/Pathfinder.

Sometimes I feel like my group is the only one that plays d20 games without maps or minis. I mean, occasionally we will if someone feels like drawing up a map, or for added clarity (I've used minis in EotE for clarity before) but a majority of the time it's just our imaginations.
