Imperial Corvette concept

By Gosric, in X-Wing

I like it. Maybe FFG should hire you to do sculpts!

Thank you. If only. I could do better models if i were not limited by the 3d printing process so that would be exceptionally groovy. So if you are reading this FFG miniature department.......

Oh, Gosric, you've done it again... I want one!

FFG, if you are reading this, hire this man!

I do not think anyone else will come up with a better, more interesting design.

while i agree this is an awesome design, if there is an imperial epic ship on the horizon, the artwork and sculpting are most likely already done.

but this is impressive......most impressive.

This thing looks amazing. I think it would be a great thing to have out on the board. Keep an eye on this guy FFG, he can do great things for you.

Thank you i appreciate that. There is a bit of lack when it comes to 100 to 200 metre Imperial ships. The Vigil is a lovely ship but somewhere around 250 i think which would probably be too large at the huge ship scale and i just dont like the Lancer and Carrack designs for reasons which have been covered in detail in other threads. I completely understand making the Tantive. It has been my favourite ship in the trilogy, along with the Y Wing, since i first saw it on the big screen way back when.

But i just wanted to attempt something to fill in the gap

Wow, you put some work into that! What programs are you working in? Mesh or solid?

You mentioned 3d print constraints- can you elaborate? I take it you are you going to print it?

I use a program called wings3d. it is not the most full featured program but it does the trick. In the most affordable material for something this size one is limited to minimum of .7mm details but it is best to stay at 1mm or above which doesnt sound bad but does limit things somewhat. Smaller miniatures can be made with much finer detail materials that have smaller tolerances but the materials are more expensive rendering something this size impractical

Wings3d is a subdivision modeler, eh? Are you modeling hard surface, inorganic shapes in SubD or do you have some control over what is SubD and not? You'd probably need to jump into a solid modeler/CAD type program to be able to make models for manufacture.

What sort of 3d print technology are you using? Personal machine or service bureau? 0.7mm minimum detail definitely ties one's hands- the fine details on the Xwing stuff is around 0.2mm.

Have you thought about chopping your model into smaller parts and having someone with an SLA printer do some grows for you? (I'm thinking B9 Creator or Form 1)

It is quite possible to get good results even with the .7mm limit there are ways to work around it . It just requires more time and attention. Smaller ships can be done in the more detail oriented material so .3mm is the limit for them and then of course the limits are few.

I use a service as im still saving towarda a good enough 3d printer to make it worth the cost

Ok. The Sentinel Corvette is complete. And i also decided to upload the Asp light escort corvette, a bit smaller and not as well armed. more of an anti fighter escort. Sadly i couldnt get them down in price as much as i wanted to. But then im not trying to compete with FFG just add to the available ships. So here they are if anyone is interested

Amazing work as always, Gosric! I'm calling 24 hours max before someone orders the Asp in FUD...

*L* It would have to be someone richer than i am. Normally im a sticker for fd or fud but on this scale with flat slab ships im thinking the cheaper SWF option will work. Evidently very large ships cannot be printed in FD even if someone was wllling to pay the price

These 2 are hollow? If not that would explain the steep price.

Is the Sentinel too long for FUD? It is only a few cm longer than the Asp.

Or is it the amount of material?

If they're not hollow you could turn the rear engine part in the a separate part that can be mounted into the hollow hull?

It is hollow but shapeways calculates cost by amount of material used (logically enough) and a wedge uses a lot of material. To give an example my Pulson A corvette/transport based loosely on the Nebulon B aesthetc is longer and taller in the hull but actually cheaper. But i am planning on separating the Asp, Sentinel and Pulson A into two part models very soon along with my Assassin class variant

Are there stats for these ships? Very nice work.

Not yet but im sure there could be.

Ok, so they just have a maximum for FUD then. Hmmm...

I'll be watching. These are very tempting, even though the price in FUD will a bit painfull.

The unarmed sentinel version also mentioned separate turrets. I don't think I saw them in your zillion pages of models.

That's some impressive work you've done I like it it's a wedge which is classic imperial but it's also it's own ship.

Very nice, i think you've totally negated my fears about having about the difficulty of having something classically 'imperial' yet still to the scale of the tantive.

I'd buy this if produced by FFG (or on the sly if some rogue element made a run of them sold as something else to avoid 'imperial (copyright) entanglements')

I ordered the Asp, it looks like it might be easier to use with the folks I usually game with. Might have to work out stats for it if there are none. If it is a hit I may look at the Sentinel. That and my brother is an awesome painter of 40K models so will make the thing look great. Will post pics when it arrives and is fully painted along with the stats we work out.

Cheers :)

The turrets are ready i just havent had the chance to upload them, The first 4,maybe 5 pages are all that really matters if thing are sorted by newest. im in the long process of removing a lot of my early ships from when i was just starting to do this and redetailing or resizing the ones worth saving

Thank you.
I wanted to do a wedge but on corvette scale that is a very impractical shape with minimal internal space so i needed to change it a bit, but i also didnt want to get too far away from the recognizable silhouette

So i compromised making it a bit flatter with cutouts to save material and therefore cost (the first draft was hideously expensive as was the fourth *L*) but leaving enough of the shape to still, i hope, give the right Imperial feel

I look forward to seeing it Weasel

I love to see in a box a ready to buy it, thanks for share us, greettings.
