Questions about Dangerous Covenants? Sam Stewart returns to the Order 66 Podcast...

By GM Chris, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

That's right! The inestimable Sam Stewart is returning to the Order 66 Podcast for our next episode on June 29, at 8:00pm CST.

Our topic? Dangerous Covenants!

We'll be exploring the Hired Gun's Sourcebook with it's Lead Developer, asking the questions we (and you) want to ask. This thread is place to get those questions submitted, so post them below.

You guys know the drill - we won't be able to ask any questions about future products. ;) We also can't guarantee all questions will make it into the limited show time we've got with Sam, but if it's relevant to Dangerous Covenants, we'll do our best.

And on Sunday, June 29, we hope you can join us and Sam in the live simulcast of the episode.

See you all then, and we look forward to your questions!

What was the thinking of making a Demolitionist spec when there is already a Saboteur in AoR? This seems to go against the idea of making similar but different specs to stop over specializing.

Also, why no concussion rifle? =)

It was probably felt hired guns should be able to blow things up, and therefore should have a demo-man class.

Or laziness. (Driver in explorer is pretty much a copy paste from AoR. The colonist is getting a quartermaster rehash, by all accounts )

Where are my Gamorreans?

I enjoy reading the campaign suggestions at the end of the book. On page 88, one such campaign is entitled "Reog's Regiment," in which the PC group is hired by a well-known mercenary group.

**WARNING SPOILERS MAY FOLLOW**

I like how things continue to get worse in the suggested "episodes," ultimately giving the PCs the reins of where to take the group next. In suggested episode 3, stuff hits the fan when the enemy hires a rival mercenary fleet to attack Reog's fleet. The PCs help defend against the attack. I was wondering if any of you guys have suggestions for running a large scale starship battle. I "didn't" listen to the episode giving starship advice, and I learned "nothing" about treating large starships as terrain, but what other suggestions do you have for handling multiple starships. Should I just narrate what happens or actually do some rolls with the other starships besides the PCs?

Any chance you could ask one of these designers waht the point of defence zones and firing arcs is?

QUESTIONS!

Q: What is Sam's favorite species in the book?

Q: What is Sam's Star Wars RPG character's favorite flavor of pie, and why?

Q: If Sam were to play a species/specialization combo from this book, what would be his #1 choice?

Q: If Sam's RPG character were to pick up one weapon from this book, what would it be and what would he do with it?

Seconded, thirded, fourthed and fifthed, asking why no concussion rifle.

Hey guys, so AoR and EotE are different game lines with different emphases and different interest/customer bases. It's not laziness, and it's not "pretty much a copy paste." The specializations are identical, but they exist in different core games. The reason for doing this kind of thing was stated here (time stamp 64:30 - 66:55, where they discuss the Driver specialization which appears in the AoR and EotE lines).

Any chance you could ask one of these designers waht the point of defence zones and firing arcs is?

Here ya go. Timestamp 16:34 - 22:45, Sam and the Order 66 guys talk about firing arcs, defense zones, and Gain the Advantage action. (they also talk further about Gain the Advantage for about 4 minutes at 34:51).

I'm curious about what made them decide to put the Keldabe class into Dangerous Covenants rather than the Vengeance class, the Interceptor class, or the Interceptor-IV class.

Where are my Gamorreans?

They will be in the Hutt sourcebook....coming soon I'm sure ('NOT' according to Sam Stuart of course ;) ) along with Nikto and Vodran. (or?)

I actually thought they might have saved Klatoonians and/or Weequay for a Hutt type book...but there they are in Dangerous Covenants.

Is Loom intended to add Advantage to Coercion checks as well as the noted Charm, Deception, and Negotiation? It seems like if a PC was making a Coerce check with an ally Looming nearby, it could potentially add some Advantage to that check. Or was this intentionally left out to avoid a min/max group of Politicos and Enforcers using a combination of Loom and Scathing Tirade?

The one question I have is what are Sam's thoughts on using X-wing with Edge or Age.

Actually my question still stands. I wasn't asking why Demolitionist was added to EotE. I was asking why it wasn't the same spec as Saboteur.

What was the thinking of making a Demolitionist spec when there is already a Saboteur in AoR? This seems to go against the idea of making similar but different specs to stop over specializing.

Because there are only so many ways to write bomb-guru and keep it "real". The systems are supposed to be stand alone, and I for one, would be pretty ticked if I was only buying into AoR and didn't get a basic soldier, or a heavy weapons soldier. Just one example/class.

Someone pointed out the pilot overlap... well how many ways are there to fly a ship? Drive a car? There is going to be overlap in classes, and most likely species assuming they want to get the icons (Mon Cal, Duros, Ithorians, Bith, etc..) to both games. I mean can you really envision no wookies for the military options? How long do you see that panning out, considering they are one of a handful of species to take it to the empire in the films? Going a bit further, the species given in AoR aren't even that great for the fighter classes (stat wise), so if nothing else, I would expect to see Trandos and Wookies in the soldier book, and a 3rd unstated species thus far to appeal to those of us that already have said 2 races in EtoE.

Really the only difference should be exceptional military operations, access to military grade equipment (and stats), and and handful of rules.... in other words mostly "fluff", vise "crunch".

Just my take on it. Could be way off.

F&D, whole other story... That said, I don't have any jedi wannabes in my groups, so that's just for "me". The good news is, by the time it comes out, it should be plug and play with the EtoE characters because they've had two years to build up enough power to equal out with a starting jedi.

Actually my question still stands. I wasn't asking why Demolitionist was added to EotE. I was asking why it wasn't the same spec as Saboteur.

To make it so if you somehow wound up with one of each in your campaign, they wouldn't step on each other's toes. (that's probably the real reason), but fluff wise, because they don't go about it the same way. I wouldn't place the IRA and EoD in the same class/category, nor would I say the IEDs in Iraq were the same as a C-4 charge. That's pretty much the same way of looking at it. Demolitionists aren't always military trained. They don't use the least amount of explosives, in the most strategic manner, to achieve the BOOM... more often they overcompensate for lack of strategic placement with a bigger explosive. Should be some differences in the two. Not sure I would have gone the route they did, but it works.

And because some days Jabba just wants to blow people up... and a demolitionist would be a good thing to retain for those days...

Totally. I would love to hear Sam's take on why there is a Demolitionist AND Saboteur spec. I've heard a similar talk given about the Pilot/Driver specs (I think that was Andy though, IIRC), so I would expect the answer to be same, but I do love it when they talk about their theory and vision behind the game.

Well to be honest we don't really have the final Saboteur spec in hand so it might not be something he will talk about before the AoR CRB is out.

SHHHHHHH...

Another question:

Can we get art for the ships they give us stats for? Some is decidedly missing.

Good questions, guys. Keep 'em coming!

What species got left out? Why? Will we eventually be seeing them?

For the life of me, other then a hutt space settings book, I couldn't see a better place to put Gamorreans or Niktos, not that I'm arguing them against what was placed in the book, just wondering if we're gonna see them as PCs eventually.

Is there anywhere I can listen to this since I missed it?

Great show guys! Really enjoyed it!
