Story Idea: The Running Men

By zackaroth, in Game Masters

I preparing to launch a new session of EoTE and I was looking around for ideas for stuff to do after the starting adventure. Then I started watching Running Man, an old 80s/90s action movie and thought that be something really cool to try in this sort of setting.

For those who never saw the movie, it's basically set in a dystopian future where criminals appear on a TV show called the Running Man. They basically have to get through a obstacle course to gain their freedom. While they are doing this they are basically hunted by Stalkers, people hired by the TV Show to track down and kill the criminals to prevent their escape..

I'm thinking of taking this idea and having the PCs get trapped/tricked into doing this. They are somehow stripped of their weapons and armor and have to use their skills and the enviorment to try to get out of this maze. Of course the twist is no ever makes it to the end so the PCs somehow have to figure this out, find a way out of the course, either kill the Crazed Moff/Smuggler Baron/Hutt(not sure which yet), or get to the ship and get the hell out of crazy town.

Has anyone tried running something like before and what was it like? Any suggestion on what type of NPCs I should use to have challenge the players at their weakest? Comments, advice or any type of experiance doing a game like this would be greatly appericated!

I could definitely see an eccentric imperial moff doing this to some high-profile rebel captives to serve as an example. I think this idea has a lot of merit.

Two things:

!) If you've not seen the Running Man, stop whatever you are doing RIGHT NOW and go buy a copy. Buy it. Watch it. Love it. Goddamned brilliant flick.

2) Might I recommend tracking down a copy of the old WEG adventure The Game Chambers of Questral. As I recall, the actual story itself was pretty crap, but you might be able to strip mine some of the ideas out of it and adapt them for your evil needs.

It's also a good book written by Stephen King under a different name.

Sounds like a great premise. On a similar note, you might also check out the TCW episodes The Box and the followup Crisis on Naboo. The first pits several bounty hunters (with Obiwan in disguise) against hazards in a controlled environment. The winners are supposed to try and assassinate Palpatine. At least in this environment there are several challenges which could keep a variety of PCs busy.

If you do this, it is a requirement that you award bonus XP for one liners.

"I'll be back!" "Only in a rerun!"

"Need a lift?"

"He had to split."

What was I thinking... This is Star Wars so we need more appropriate one liners for a Running Man story set in a Galaxy Far Far Away...

"He had a blast!"

"You look cramped. How 'bout some space?" [opens the airlock door]

"He was a Jedi... Now he will just-die."

Great movie, and one of the best Arnold lines in any of his movies

"Killian, I'll be back"

"Only in a re-run"

Sigh, so much awesome. . . .

I was thinking of doing something similar with Rodian hunters, hostile wildlife and creatures in a game reserve with some unsavoury character watching over them in a kind of Hunger Games/Running Man/Predators mashup.

Go find the book. It's one of the books King wrote using the name Richard Bachman. So much darker. The movie is nothing like the book and the book is better.

Instead of there being gladiators and an arena, They set people loose in the city, with a few bucks and offer rewards to citizens who call in tips. Much bigger and scarier. Everyone is an enemy.

They'll never make a faithful movie of it now, because of the end, where the main character flys a plane into the games building.

Don't scream spoiler. It's a book from the seventies.

I think this idea has a lot of promise! Especially if your group gets the references and digs those old movies. :)

Personally, I'd set it on some fringe world, as an event staged by some local crime boss. Doesn't even have to be a Hutt - mix things up for a change. I wouldn't have the Empire be involved in an official capacity, but that doesn't mean that there is not some eccentric moff or a prison overseer who might stage such events as an illegal way to make a couple credits on the side. Art imitates life , right?

This is a relatively late post for this thread, but people who are thinking of this idea might want the read The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell, or at least a summary of it.

It is about a man who becomes ship-wrecked and swims to an island owned by a rich hunter. The hunter uses the island to hunt captive sailors, for he has become bored of hunting animals. He gives them a knife, clothes, and a three hour head start.

This might be a fun premise for an EoTE adventure as well, or any other RPG for that matter.

"He was a Jedi... Now he will just-die."

That was horrible, I loved it!! :o

I dare say, no one could say that with out doing the Ah-nald accent!

"Get to the Speeda'!!!"
