What I learned about Wave 4 tonight

By Hrathen, in X-Wing

I won the E-wing at Imadaar and got my first chance to play it tonight at a local escalation tournament.

The tournament was mostly just for fun and I wanted to try a few things out.

First one: Tarn + R7 droid

For a total o only 25 points you get a pretty hard to kill X-wing. In case you don't know, Tarn is allowed to acquire a TL on any ship that attacks him. The R7 droid allows you to spend TL defensively. You sped the TL and the attacker has to re-roll any dice you declare. They can't be re-rolled again, since no dice can ever be re-rolled more than once. The R7 droid does specify that it only works once per round. But this is still a huge boost. Tarn only has a PS of 3, but that is why he is so cheap. Tarn did very well tonight.

Second one: E-wing + Sensor Jammers. I have wanted to try out sensor jammers on B-wings, but there are so many other great things to put in the slot. Tonight I put sensor jammers on Coran Horn. He was so expensiveI wanted to protect him. They were awesome. Basically every time you are attacked and you opponent doesn't have a focus, they do one damage less than they would have. This was huge! If you have played X-wing you know how messy it can get. How many less-than-optimal shots you take. Even if they have a focus token, it at least forces them to spend it. I think the advanced sensors came into play in about 60% of the times Coran was shot at. loved them.

Over all I was very happy with my two experiments.

Tarn+R7 automatically replaces almost any 25pts in a rebel list. Just start at 75pts and call it good. With any other sharing or token abilities Tarn just gets better. Low PS yes, still beats 1,2 and ties BHs and greens.

Tarn + R7 is amazing tanky. He is also anti-synergistic with Biggs. To fully take advantage of Tarn, in theory, a squad full of tanks would be good, since it would force your opponent to make difficult target priority choices. Post rebel aces:

100 points

Tarn + R7

5x PRototype Pilot + Refit

Its biggest drawback in a tournament will be going to time. It has the equivalent firepower of just under 4 X-wings.

Edit: math fail. :P

I really want to try Tarn and R7, Hobbie and Stressbot, Craken with squad leader, and Biggs.

I don't think Tarn is Antisynergistic with Biggs. Biggs keeps him alive to late game when his ability matters more. He drops to focus fire almost as fast as any other X-wing.

I would say he drops to focus fire a little slower. Sure he can only use R7 once per found. So he can reduce the damage of the first attack, or if you are really smart, the most dangerous attack.

Last night when I had TIEs shooting at him, (and focus firing) I didn't always need his ability on the first attack, since TIEs sometimes don't attack very well.

What's the difference between a little slower and almost as fast? :P

Almost a little slower?

I always think of Biggs passing the baton to Tarn when he drops. "You're on your own kid..." 'SPLODE

Tarn can also use the astromech slot for an EPT. Nothing amazing yet but keep an eye on that one. Even outmaneuver at 4pts is solid. PTL is ok and buying him more actions is too expensive.

Does Tarn get a lock on every ship that attacks him?

He can only hold one at a time.

Tarn has tons of possibilities. At the very least he has retired the already unpopular Red Squadron pilot for the same points. 1 more point for the EPT droid or the new R7 really open him up. Even Tarn naked is a very solid ship. Having him shoot later with his lower PS makes it so you can use his target lock the turn he gets it.

I doubt he's retired Red Squadron from Bloody Daggers.
