YT-2400 vs Firespray

By Hrathen, in X-Wing

When I first looked at the YT-2400 it looked like a nice midway between the named YT-1300 and the Outer Rim Smugler. But after further examination I find it makes a better comparison to the Firespray. As we all know 2 agility dice is a lot more than 1 agility. Firesprays can resist damage pretty well.

I have also built entire lists around putting Expert Handling on Firesprays because I love barrel-roll-ing larg ships. It gives them so much manuverability, especially with their rear firing arc. I image that the 360 arc on the YT-2400 will make barrel-rolling even better.

In fact of all the things the YT-2400 has, the thing I am most excited about, isn't the 360 firing arc, or the potential to have a 360 degree firing HLC, or the 2 agility, it is the barrel-roll on the action bar.

The second thing I am most excited about is Dash's Pilot Ability. If there is anything that makes larg-based ships hard it is asteroids. Dash's ability to ignore them is just awesome. If he ends his turn on them, he is going to be able to barrel roll of pretty much no matter what. I think He is going to make asteroid play a lot of fun.

If the YT-2400 has any down side, it is its 2 attack dice. Now I am not one of those players who don't like 2 attack dice ships. I love A-wings, TIE Fighters and even TIE Advanced. But the YT-2400 is going to be expensive enough that 2 attack dice might seen a little low. I am sure I will try out the the HLC turret build, but at 12 points I find it pretty expensive. I don't think the range 1 (can't shoot) area is going to be that big of a deal) but 12 points is a ton; it is a whole ship. I think I am more likely to use something like Outmanuver, or Preditor to up the firepower rather than the bumping it all the way up to a Turreted HLC.

The YT-2400 looks to fill the role of "tricksy big ship" and I couldn't be more excited about that.

I think that your comparison to the Firespray is spot on and I also agree with the reasoning around the turret and the Outrider card. The ability to innately barrel roll, coupled with the potential to mount a cannon and have a turret make for one nasty ship.

Leaving Dash aside for now, mounting an Ion Cannon with maybe a tactician, firing said cannon in one round, then being able to maneuver around the target for a 3 dice R1 one turret shot next round could be real nasty.

If you add Dash to the mix it gets really interesting. I am not sure I'd use the Outrider card, but I think the YT-2400 fills that gap left between the fighters and the YT-1300 in a similar manner to how the Firespray fills that gap for the Empire.

I think Boba Fett might be a good counter to Dash the Outrider and HLC. Oh Dash you went that way instead, yeah I'll following you and stay within Range 1 and tear you a new one.

That's the first time I've heard THAT statement.

And it's also right.

But none of these are the VT-49.

If there was a Darth Vader drives a Cadillac type ship, this is it.

I may buy a 2nd one just to put spinners and neon runner lights on the thing.

Want big 360 soontir? PTL, Engine Upgrade, Kyle Katarn.

Boost, Barrel Roll, focus.

That's crazy expensive at 58 points.

You could probably drop it down to a (still expensive) 53 because with that kind of maneuverability you don't really need the full 360 on the HLC.

I'd probably agree that its more efficient without the Outrider title, but most Han Shoots First lists in my area feature a 58 point Han Solo build, as that leaves you 42 points for two Rookie Pilots. 58 points IS pricey, but its not unheard of.

In many ways that YT-2400 may be what some would expect for a Skipray.

1. It's got a 2 dice turret

2. It's got a cannon upgrade.

3. It has some maneuverability options.

When thinking about what a Skipray would look like calling it a "Firespray with a 2 dice turret" seems somewhat close to right and that's what we get with the YT-2400.

Now the rebels have the ability to 360 degree ION out to range 3. Granted, that's expensive, but you can do it...

As to the original post. I have to agree. The Outrider is the Rebel Firespray. Unfortunatly(or furtunatly) Triple Outrider lists don't look to be a thing. Not at 35 minimum with HLC. But Doubles still leaves 24-30 points to work with. Two A-Wings or Z-95s and Two Outriders could be pretty beastly...
