World Cup Anyone?

By R22, in X-Wing

So I've noticed, especially regarding prices and shipping, how international the XWM community is. Which got me wondering, if I may depart from our usual fare, any World Cup fans out there? Match or overall predictions?

Fun fact: There's a book in the EU ("The Crystal Star" by Vonda McIntyre) where soccer/futbol is the implied favored sport of Mandalore. It's called "bolo-ball" or Limmie. It's described as a game where you tackle, kick, head, can't use your hands, and must score goals. It involves two halves, penalty kicks, a central ref, and linesmen. Mandolorians are described as especially obsessed with it and pack the bars to watch games. In fact, they call it "Meshgeroya" which means "the Beautiful Game" -- the same moniker soccer/futbol is known as. Likewise, in what may be a sly way of equating Coruscant with the US, it's mentioned that Coruscant is the only planet where bolo-ball isn't the top sport and often misunderstood. There is also a Galactic Cup of Limmie -- though it was understandably canceled the year Team Alderaan was destroyed along with their planet.

Germany v Portugal game is on right now and a scintillating affair.

Love the WC. What a smack down Holland laid on Spain.

As a Manchester United fan, I am thrilled van Gaal is our incoming manager. Hope he can inspire a much better season than did Moyes.

You have time for anything but x-wing ..........

I think it's cool the way people all over the world come together to watch the World Cup, but as an American who doesn't know much about futbol I feel a bit like this:

I'm Canadian, but I love the world cup. I'm glad to see this world cup producing more exciting play and goals than years prior.

Love the World Cup when it comes round! Am a Charlton Athletic fan, so watching Iran later as only player we've got plays for them! Mainly an Italy fan though, so won't say any more about that as England gave us a game for sure

As a long time Holland fan... Hell yes!

This year's cup is Def exciting go Colombia

Soccer...best cure for insomnia ever invented.

Such creativity in this comment, never heard anything like it before!

Amazing contribution, we all value your well-expressed opinion dearly.

As having parents that emigrated from Holland, we were going crazy at all the scoring.

I'll end by saying, Hup Holland! Hup! Cannot wait for tomorrow's game vs. Austrailia.

Soccer. The third most boring sport on television.(only surpassed by Golf and Baseball)

But I can't stand to watch any sports because they're boring so to each their own.)

^ I also do not watch sports at all on TV, but I do enjoy the World Cup particularly. It's like the olympics, everyone has a team they can get behind due to the national team aspect, and watching any game can be exciting for someone with any interest in international relations and events.

I'm also of Dutch descent, and a huge Holland supporter last cup and this year as well.

I`m not a Football fan, but i have these re-lapse`s every couple of years...... but being an England supporter my

affliction dos`nt last that long, Usually about 3 match`s then it goes away..

Im Mexican, and today we manage to stop Brasil, so for us that´s a huge victory even we tied the match

American anomaly- the WC (and futbol, in general) is on the tele almost constantly at our house. The wife has become quite the fan of the sport and I have succumbed as a result. Like someone else said: to me, the World Cup is a lot like the Olympics- one of the few sporting events I will watch religiously.

And here I thought FFG changed the name of the X-Wing Finals...going back to sleep now...

Usa vs Germany in the final

Oh yes the World Cup.

I love it, being an Englishman it's part of the genetic makeup. Coventry City fan so the World Cup is an opportunity to get behind quality teams for a change - though the result is often the same, that is the team I support don't do very well...

I'll just leave this here...

Enjoy.

I have a very understanding wife, and have watched at least one match each night since the WC started.

As an England supporter I'm already well accustomed to the heartache so I expect more shortly.

Holland/Spain has been the best match so far I'd say. RVP's header was sublime. Didn't expect that result at all.

Looking for Argentina to perform (my second team), but need Brazil to keep on as I picked them in the work sweepstake!

EDIT - Not sure why that posted twice. If someone could delete it that would be cool.

I love watching the world cup soccer. Being half dutch, half portuguese, I currently have mixed feelings.
Impressed by mexico yesterday. After the dutch victory over Spain everyone was happy at the prospect that Holland would not have to face Brasil in the next round. Now I'm not so sure what will happen. :-)

Brazil haven't turned up yet. Maybe the pressure is too much for them? You can see how emotional they are before their matches. A bit too much I'd say.

So far it's looking like Germany or Holland for me.

The World Cup is fantastic, it's a sure fire way to actually get Americans to watch soccer. Unfortunately if we don't step up our game, we're going nowhere. Ghana outplayed us... but we got more goals, and a win is a win. Here's hoping we can break out of the Group of Death!
