Since Lord of the makai is a free enhance that as its effect is you get momentum from either your hand or top of your deck, if your opponent responds with miserable existance to lord of the makai, which location will it use, or does the player using miserable existance get to choose?

the trigger is not "before a player plays an ability that adds momentum" it is "before a player adds momentum" so my guess is that player A plays LotM, naming where the momentum will be coming from. At that point player B may respond. If player A choose top of deck, player B can get a card from the top of player Bs deck. If player A choose to put a card from hand, player B may put a card from player Bs hand into his momentum.

Correct Guess.
