Just out of curiousity... how often do you build your list based on the names of the pilots and the fluff?
How often do you fly based on fluff?
never
Never, I will occasionally make my own fluff though.
"The Old Boys"
Y-Wing x2
HWK-290
In casual play I will sometimes do fluff squads or a theme. It is fun to play with pilots that I sometimes would not normally use.
well cause i play warhamemr 40k iam a veeery fluff based player and most of my list are fluff based like obsidian squadron, black squadron and the trenchrunning vader list, the crimson guard etc etc.. that doesnt mean that i dont have my own compilations but still i love to fly fluff-wise and its cool if my opponent doesnt do it i mean as far as i do it iam happy ;P.
Edited by SoulCrusherExLiterally never... The game doesn't lend itself to fluff.
I definitely purchase certain ships specifically for the scenarios I want to fly. Like 4 Imperial Aces packs so I can have 4 Royal Guards escorting a shuttle.

dats what i diiiid ;P hehe someone who fully understands me ^^
ALL THE TIME.
Turnie...smernie.
X-Wing is a baby cake ... not a **** job.
Thanks FFG...it's a ****... good... cake!
!!!
Sometimes, Of course when I do its usually on Vassal, because when I play on the tabletop it usually involves a significant travel time, so when that happens I want to win a bit more than I want to try to use a extremely fluffy list
The only fluff games I've really played would be Luke vs. Vader with my little brother. And Luke almost always wins.
I'd line up my B-Wings in front of an Ion Cannon Y-Wing like a chariot and call it my "B-Wing Chariot!" if that counts as fluff.
And my love for B-Wings and running 4x Dagger Squadron pilots has me screaming "Daggers for life!" every time my quad B's decimate the enemy.
We had a tournament recently where all squads had to be fluff based, called "All Wings Report In!" Essentially the TO set squad-building rules that all ships in a player build had to be based on some "historical" squadron or event. For example, Wedge, Luke, or Biggs with Red Squadron pilots, or an Endor Squad of Lando, Tycho & Wedge, etc. It was really fun for a Saturday store event and provided a lot of variety and builds that strayed from the norm. We had 16 players and everyone wanted to do it again sometime. Everyone had fun looking up various squadrons or events on Wookiepedia to get ideas.

I try to keep thematic lists and imagine what scenario would make that combo viable or necessary.
Black Squadron: Vader, Mauler Mithel, Dark Curse, Backstabber, Black Squadron Pilot
181th: Soontir Fel, Turr Phennir, Lt Lorrir, Saber Squadron (I sometime cheat and take a Alpha Squadron Pilot instead of the Saber)
Shuttle with Royal Guard: Kagi , Carnor Jax, Royal Guard Interceptor
Trench Run: Luke, Biggs, Wedge
Attack on the Death Star: Garven, Dutch, 2x Red Squadron Pilot
All-star: Han with Chewie and now 3P0, Luke with R2D2
Yeah, I like to fly team with a theme behind. It adds some flavour and force you to think outside the box and take upgrades or pilots you would not have otherwise. It's also a good challenge to win with a team that is not optimal, the whole Fly Casual thing. But, if I were to enter a tournament, I would not bother with it and just optimise the team.
Never. It's always either something I love to fly (Interceptors, TIEs, Firespray, Phantom) or something I want try (Ibtisam/Opportunist, triple BH, etc). It's certainly why I rarely fly the Falcon, though Han, Chewie, and Lando are amongst my very favorite characters (after R2D2, of course); just don't enjoy flying it. The turret, mostly.
I expect the A, E, and probably Defender to be in that group soon.
Edited by R2ShihTzuJust for thematic tournaments. My local TO put together a trilogy of tournaments - one for each movie in the original trilogy. The tournament rules stated you could only fly ships that appeared in the movie and named pilots had to be from the film, too. That really limited the Imperials. We had fun with it. My A New Hope list was a TIE swarm led by Vader. For Empire Strikes Back I put down Boba Fett + Navigator, a bomber, and a TIE or two. My Return of the Jedi list was four Saber Squadron TIE Interceptors with Push the Limit - took second in that one.
Why is it called 'fluff'?
There's just something pejorative about that term.
(I like 'lore')

If I had to choose between *only* playing to have fun, or *only* playing to win, I'd pick fun. All day.
So yes, I build the so-called "fluff" lists. Oddly, if someone doesn't try to fly every ship in the game like an X-Wing with slightly different stats, they're all quite capable and fun to use.
Fun. All the time.

I also dislike the term "fluff".
(Unless, of course, we're talking about the proper noun Fluff, in which case I love Fluff and the jar with the name on it that I drink milk out of.)
I agree that the term comes across as pejorative.
But to answer the question; always. The game is based on a property and stories. I don't understand how anyone can play a game looking at stats alone. It's something I just can't do.
I don't play Yahtzee for a reason.
Literally never... The game doesn't lend itself to fluff.
???????????????????????????????????????????????????????
I can only assume that you were were speaking in jest as XWM is all about "fluff"- why else have any of the"named" pilots?
To answer the OP original question...
I nearly always try to include a little "fluff" in my builds, even if it is just having a "theme" in mind when I build competitive lists.
For casual play, I try to stay true to the original SW lore when designing scenarios and squad lists. Its more... FUN! (IMO)
Pretty much all the time. Occasionally attempt to make optimized lists but base them on a theme. I love using Vader even though he is expensive. In my group we aim for 100 pt lists but often go over as people want to try differing combos. I will never do a tourney as am not interested, neither are the other 6 members in my group. We just play for fun and have tried games with rules for moving asteroids, hilarious, and attempted fighting in a gravity well.
By "fluff" I assume you mean according to established Star Wars lore.
Initially tried to build squads according to "fluff" like Rogue Squadron, the 181st Saber Squadron or just not mixing pilots that historically never flew together. Admittedly that's very restrictive and unfortunately I found, to my dismay, that a lot of them don't work well competitively so I ended up building optimized squads that keep a certain basic theme like Imp tech only or XXBB squads lead by a Rogue Sqd member.
Hopefully the more ships we get in the future the more opportunities we'll have to build good "fluff" based squads.
Fluff? As in, "just for fun?"
Are you crazy?! This isn't a game.
Oh wait...
X-wing is great for having cards and rules that keep with the fluff. I dont play Attack Wing, but ive heard about the ridiculous lists you can make. I mean, I dont always put R2D2 with Luke, but I dont think Vader (crew) in a Firespray really appeals to me.
