R7 Astromech, Re-rolling Twice

By SithSinner, in X-Wing Rules Questions

With the new R7 Astromech how does this card play out because I know in the rules it specifically says you cannot re-roll a dice twice. So does this mean you can only choose the dice they did not re-roll after they have modified their dice or does it mean you get to choose the dice before they modify their dice and then they can’t spend their target lock on the dice picked. I guess this could also be seen as an exception to the re-roll dice twice rule and you can re-roll them twice with the R7. I would say it means you can only pick the dice they did not re-roll after they modify their dice because it says "when defending." Any ideas?

Dice modification occurs like this:

Attacker rolls attack dice

Defender modifies (R7 goes off here)

Attacker modifies (their TL goes off here)

Defender rolls defence dice

Attacker modifies

Defender modifies

Dice modification occurs like this:

Attacker rolls attack dice

Defender modifies (R7 goes off here)

Attacker modifies (their TL goes off here)

Defender rolls defence dice

Attacker modifies

Defender modifies

Is this sequence in rule book somewhere?

Attacker modifies (their TL goes off here)

Defender rolls defence dice

Attacker modifies

Defender modifies

Which means that with R7, you alter all of their Hits/Crits, then they cannot re-roll them back, although they could still re-alter them with focus tokens.

Yeah, the steps of the attack phase section.

Yeah, the steps of the attack phase section.

Ok thanks, I see it now. "If the attacker and defender both have abilities that can modify attack dice, the defender resolves all of his abilities before the attacker." R7 seems like a really good card then, especially if you run it with Tarn Mison :D

Spizzactly

To continue this logic, to make sure I understand-

Attacker: Bounty Hunter w/Gunner, Has a target lock on Tarn

Defender: Tarn w/R7.

Bounty Hunter declares attack on Tarn.

Tarn receives Target Lock

BH rolls Hit, Hit, Blank

Tarn forces reroll of Hit and Hit w/R7 by spending TL

BH rolls hit, blank w/reroll

BH has no focus, cannot use current TL. Attack results final.

Tarn rolls 2 evades. Attack misses

Now, BH uses Gunner

Tarn receives new TL

BH rolls hit, blank, eye

Tarn- cannot use R7 now

BH spends TL on blank & eye, gets hit and crit.

Tarn rolls 2 blanks.

Tarn takes 2 hits and a crit.

Is this correct?

Side note- Possibly good strategy to force only one die to be rerolled if attacker has Gunner?

Looks correct to me.

In the first half, he could theoretically re-roll the original blank, though not either of the two that R7 re-rolled.

As far as Gunner goes, if your expected odds of taking damage from the 2nd Gunner attack, then taking exactly 1 damage on the first is ideal.
