Character Discussion: Lu Chen

By MegaGeese, in UFS Deck Building

Well, it derailed a Hilde thread in GenD, so why not?

I cba to reall put my thoughts into words right now since I'm in the process of fallin asleep as I type this. But I'll wake up a little earlier than normal to yak about why I like Lu Chen.

Spoiler - hand control and card pool manipulation for doing what you were gonna do anyway - block.

He's pretty alright, but his best symbol (Good) lacks in any real good card draw at the moment. As such is 6 handsize becomes sorta a liability on your opponant's turn.

Okay, I'm awake now!

So yeah. Lu Chen's got great abilities. He make playing Reversals a great idea. Way better than that poser Naks.

But his best attribute is that he doesn't HAVE to play Reversals. The game is supposed to be moving to a more attack-and-block based setup, where people attack/cause damage over multiple attacks and turns. As such, there are times when Reversals are actually going to leave you more open. Opponent just eats the damage or whatever (maybe they negated his E, Red Lotus'd, whatever), and then proceed to bash you since you have 2 cards in your card pool. But the fact is, his Response is his best ability; all he has to do is something the game already promotes (blocking), and for 1 momentum and 1 foundation, he snatches a card from their hand. It screws up Combo better than Alba (since Alba would have them play something potentially advantageous), and helps the slow down aggressive swings by having them commit that one extra foundation to pass checks they might otherwise have passed.

He's got FANTASTIC stats at 6/28, and two great symbols (Good/Water), with Life being a late bloomer. The fact that the guy can play Rejection, Chester's, Mysterious Stance, and all the Siegfried counter-control in the same deck also makes him very smexy, in my eyes. His awesome action card clogs both card pools, but has the benefit of being able to intereact with Raw Talent to clear the pool while boosting damage. His Super Rare attack, Wrath of Heaven, isn't character-only, but hot **** almighty can it seal a game.

Ultimately he's probably best off a Good/Water mix, since Water is where the draw power's at (unless you're using Homerun/Decorated for Service). Just needs a touch of momentum generation (sigh, White Magic will have to do, I guess...ugh), and you're off to the races.

O...and Cursed Blood. Do it.

Free Will is a reversal player's best friend :)

Lu Chen is awesome, but as I'd already said, the power lies not in Nako, but her asset Father Bull. Father Bull + Shadow Blade + Nako E = a full turn ended, more often than not.

Lu Chen's R is mostly great because that random card could be an attack, AND it clogs their card pool. He simply makes yet another great candidate for Yugao, and yeah, taking 2 of the opponent's foundations temporarily out of play? Yeah...

He's a baller, no denying that. As much as I love the two off of Good, Good/Water have so much in common that running puring Water is certainly justifiable.

White Gi.

and don't let Lu Chen block. it's a bad idea.

Yeah, White Gi is exactly what I was thinking. 'cept I also want enough momentum to play the Good R on Mysterious Stance =D

Yugao, Crane Strike, Chi Disruptor...hot **** almighty. I love Lu Chen. I just wish his third symbol either chained better or had better cards to work with. If he has Earth instead of Life...hot ****. Criminal Past AND Mysterious Stance? Jesus.

Throw in Ass. Arts and it's just a gigantic pain in the butt.

One thing though that I know after testing for the regional last weekend is Lu Chen doesn't like Zi Mei or Akuma. He is really reliant on his abilities, more so then a lot of other characters and Evil aggro burns a hole right through his vitality (though if he gets a decent first turn set up he's a tough tank to beat through).

White Magic + White Gi = momentum

Although Quazark got it, most obviously, Lu Chen just HATES Tag Along, especially since he has two abilities he just loves to play. As much as I hate Stardust Drop, it really does trigger a LOT of reversal-related abilities.

Why hasn't anyone metioned Demuth's Sponsorship yet? Is it not cool to completly block things, or has it just been overlooked? It can either give you a free reversal or a nice momentum for Lu Chen's R.

If Lu Chen had Earth, he would have a 5HS. Or else he'd be unbalanced. :3

I like Lu Chen in concept, for he is extremely sexy in concept, but I think there's just no way to execute what you want to do a) reliably and b) with backup plans in case you can't do what you wanted to do. If you guys can prove me wrong, please please do :)

you have to give Dom's Lu Chen deck a play-test when you get the chance. That thing is beast.

...if your attack gets completely blocked, you can pretty much call that screwed-over right there.

What's more: Shadow Blade. It's a shame people never EVER mention this **** card, as it's one of the best attacks evar made.

I think it's what he plans on playing for Canadian Nats, so if anything there will probably be a decklist after that, but I'll ask him anyway.
