Imperial HUGE Ships...I'm Calling It.

By Joe Boss Red Seven, in X-Wing

In other news, I'm thinking of kitbashing the BFF-1 Bulk Freighter :

320px-BFF1BulkFreighter-TCG.jpg

If I do make one, I really hope that FFG doesn't go an make one as well. It's a pretty iconic ship from the TIE fighter game, and it does seem like the video games are overwhelmingly the EU that FFG draws from, so.... yeah.

****, I just had the most painful flashback to the X-wing/TIE Fighter games.

I don't think I can count the number of those things that I blew up. I used to fly really slowly in between its "wings" to stay nicely protected from any pursuers. I guess I wouldn't get to do that in X-Wing, but I'd still like to see them.

I'd love to see the BFF-1 Bulk Freighter make it into the game, if not as an Imperial Epic ship, then as an option accessory for objective-based games.

Make it a multi-component model, with the four Class-A Cargo Containers it transports removable and mountable on their own flying bases.

So, you'd have one big ship to escort and protect, or four individual cargo containers to capture or destroy.

It would help make objective matches much more cinematic, at least!

Like this one? ;)

Yes, exactly like TOPO's model!

I jumped and got an absolutely beautiful Kenner Blockade Runner on eBay last year, and sure enough FFG made one this year that is a little nicer and a little smaller. Now what do I do with two similar but different ships?

Keep the one you think makes the better Blockade Runner (after seeing one retouched and detailed, my vote is keep the Kenner one), then get some plastic card and bits and turn the other one into a Pelta-class frigate it can escort around.

Or...

The Corellian Passenger Liner "Queen of the Empire," Corellian Support Frigate,

Corellian Buccaneer, and many other variants.

Not to mention the DP20 ... http://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/108071-cr90-imperial-version-or-proxy-miniature/

Not that ugly, going with pics from the XWA Upgrade guys 3D models.

DAMMIT!!

BUT! That mini is too mini. The BFF-1 should be nearly as long as the CR-90.

So there.

Just checked, supposed to be 120 Meters or so... I concede the point, It's not big enough. :)

And that size is also debatable, given that the containers are 75m long each, which means that two of them stacked front to back are going to be 150m. So, at that point, it's just as long as the CR-90.

I probably said it before, but just in case someone missed it: I think this really should be considered, given its in-universe prevalence.

But why does it have to be so ugly?? At least the one you've just pictured isn't so bad. I think I could learn to accept it, if it looked like what you imaged, rather than:

Yeah the guys have been rendering ships for years and some of their work is pretty amazing...

Even the lancer looks better.

Granted, still a little bit xxx.

If anyone wants to check it out. Seriously, XW Alliance + XWA Upgrade = Sploosh!

In which case... why is the phallicity of the Lancer considered a drawback to its inclusion. Guys afraid their girls are going to prefer their toys over their toys' owners?

To be honest, I never even thought about the Lancer that way until this forum, where it seems that's all anyone cares about pointing out about it. Still don't really care: it looks like an anti-fighter platform from a design perspective. Plus, if they make a ship specifically designed to take out fighters, it will make the CR-90 more appealing due to its anti-capital capabilities.

Merely continuing a long running jibe. Don't get testy... ;)

I was attempting to point out that the XWA Upgrade guys did a fantastic job on all the ships from that game and to highlight that ships considered 'ugly' could actually look pretty cool, in XW Miniatures, If given the right design tweak.

I personally think the Lancer would be better than the Vigil, but that's just because I remember them with fondness from Rebellion.

I wonder if the Skipray blastboat will ever show up? A twin-pack of blastboats with a TIE, maybe Advanced or Bomber, priced around the same as the CR90 would be really nice.

Am I the only one who is thinking "why don't they do the Imperial Research Ship from XW:A?" - I mean half of the TIEs in the game are experimental/non-standard-issue ships (Advanced, Defender, Phantom) and althought the Decimator will very likely fix that Imperial support options are still rather limited ...

IRV-XWA.jpg

Pro:

- It could easily be thematically bundled with the Advanced, allowing for all the "fixing the Advanced"-upgrades some are championing here on the board. If not any other TIE could easily be bundled with it for an upgrade treatment.

- It is mostly symetirical; there are two mirror axis running through the ship so it would be rather easy to make it.

- One of the themes of the Empire, established in the Original Trilogy, was it's heavy reliance on technology over Personal Skill ("Don't be so sure of the Technologcial Terror you have constructed"); this is was not very well reflected prior to Wave 4 and could still be expanded upon.

- There is a named variant for a Title card: In it's appearance in XW:A it is called the Sardis .

- It's got visible hangars, it makes for a good oportunity to add a new system to the game (or at least some interesting upgrades). Also makeing it a good TIE carrier for narrative play. For those who like me are no fan of "oh they are launching from that Star Destroyer way off the board"-explainations on where you CnC is.

- It's grey, it's functional. So Imperial.

Cons:

- It only appeared in XW:A (though twice) and then in a very specific context.

- According to the stats I found online it is quite a bit larger than the Huge Ships currently in the game. 650x330x250 as opposed to the CR90s 150x50x33. (Though there wouldn't be too much of an outcry for scaling it down since it not a very well established design)

(still looking for a High-Poly variant of the model ... XW:A-Upgrade doesn't yet have it)

Yes, you probably are the only one thinking this ****.

"[oh, they could shrink it to only four times the length of a CR90]"

It would be a big grey block (with no weapons) in a fighter dog-fighting game,

and there would be no dogfight because it would be in the way, but still

you could use some sticky puddy to have the fighters fly up the side of it,

over it, and down the other side, yes it's almost funny,

really, such little respect you have for imperial squad players.

I love XW Alliance, but I don't think that is a good choice...

What about the Imperial Customs Corvette (or Light Corvette as it was listed as well) from the old d6 rpg. 180 metres, 6 double turbolasers and a very distinctive double pronged bow. Would make a good CR90 equivalent.

nebulonb_1_2.png

That is all.

nebulonb_1_2.png

That is all.

Isn't that a rebel ship?

(Yes, I know it's really an Imperial ship that was stolen by the rebels, but I imagine that most do not.)

I'd definitely like to see the WEG D6 material get some love over all this stuff coming out of the video games, and I generally like this ship, but I think most would consider it too funky-looking with that double bow. Of course, it's nicer than that obscenity that Radarman5 posted above.

Honestly, of all the suggestions in this whole thread, I'd have to say that the Imperial Escort Carrier (Wedge-shaped version) is the most likely entry. It's got a very "Imperial" shape while still being in a size category they can work with, it looks cool in a "you didn't have to play the game and have attached nostalgia" way, it has a very clearly defined role thanks to it's name, obvious weapon armaments and from its appearances in the game, and the game it appeared in sold well.

You could also say it comes with a readily obvious upgrade card (Commander Sarklii), and including it opens the door to the TIE Hunter. Not personally a favorite of mine, but it does garner a certain level of admiration as far as I can tell on this forum.

Now I'm sure many of these same things could be said about most of the ships here, but I don't really think every one of them applies to these other mentioned ships. Especially that enormous flanged mace looking thing up there. Honestly didn't think it was possible for something to be shaped like a flanged mace and also look terrible. But just… dear god...

I think this is a really good candidate: about the right size, about the right level of armament, and visually distinctive while still looking Imperial(ish).

Yeah that is my number two on the probably list, but it is big, so I still think that Vigil is the more likely to be made.

Bolda did this one, it is great IMO.

^_^

Would be interesting to see the Gozanti with some ties...I have this in 1\350 ...Strike class cruiser would open up the planetary invasion for Epic conquests...I do love the Vigil a mini version of an SSD...
