Imperial HUGE Ships...I'm Calling It.

By Joe Boss Red Seven, in X-Wing

Just out of curiosity, since I'm new to X-Wing, but what license rights does FFG have exactly? Obviously they have the original trilogy and the EU, but what about the prequels, Clone Wars, or Rebels? It just seems like they're running out of iconic ships already.

According to an interview with the owner, Christian Peterson, the license covers all of Star Wars but in their view the game is focused on the galactic civil war and aftermath and they have no plans to include any exclusively clone wars era stuff.

Also worth noting is that their license was secured before Lucas sold to Disney, and thus the wording may be a bit different. Suffice it say that the release of EU material by FFG would be in contrast to Disney's new policy of only the films being primary canon...

End of the day Disney has final say on anything that's added not ffg, they don't seem opposed to stuff from video games which is good, and the new trilogy will give ffg New ships for a while.

Galactic Civil war and aftermath might include Rebels and the new trilogy.

Added to this the OT and he many, many games.

Somewhere in there are THE Imperial Epic ships.

What will they be?

The suspense.....

Paaaaage 60!

Disney isn't going to annihilate the EU, it's just changing the approach. Their hands aren't tied by EU construct for whatever canon material is coming out in the future. That's the only real change. I mean, they've owned Star Wars for a while now and EU stuff is still being published in many different media and formats.

Lucasfilm Licesning is still a thing, too. It's not like the minutiæ of EU vs. canon are being agonized over at a conference room table by Walt Disney and his board of directors.

Also, "Star Wars: Rebels" lets us see with subtle hints and obvious ones, what's canon and what isn't. Such as a Kaiburr Crystal.

Or..... IS IT !?!?!?!?

As I recall the announcement was basically "Here's what is official canon. Everything else we can change to fit our stories". So EU is still around, just don't be startled if it gets retconed basically. Everyone paniced though and took it to mean it was all void.

Well, if that is the case, I wish they'd concentrate their effort on greenlighting some Imperial huge ships for FFG.

My understanding is similar to yours. "Everything is still canon until something newer contradicts it", realistically it doesn't matter anyways, if its a good story I will read it, and if I like the way a ship looks/performs I will use it on the table top, I won't boycott a Imperial huge just because FFG made a ship a half inch too short/long according to what it should be according to cannon

The EU is a sourcebook. They'll use the stuff but not the plotlines. So the TIE defender might still be a thing but the plot of TIE fighter isn't. Mandalore is still a thing but it's full of dead pacifists now

Well since Commander is canon so is the Defender and VT49 since they were in the last patch.

Small victories.

Well if the defender and decimator are 'canon' based on commander, then I want bombs for hwk-290.

The HWK-290 using bombs? Eugh, that's disgusting. Who greenlit THAT? Though I suppose you COULD actually replace the turret with an external bomb bay, or refit the nose area where the second crewman sits into an internal bomb bay, equally with little actual work.

Yeah, they've actually been rather careless. Those Dark Troopers look ridiculous.

Dark Troopers or Purge Troopers? Significant difference.

The Dark Troopers. They redesigned them for some reason with weird predatoresque missile launchers and an exposed core.

I'm not really seeing how a Howlrunner swarm would do well in epic when 3 Assault Missiles firing at PS 8 is only 66 points. I'm sure I could come up with more ways to get other Z-95s TL + Focus for Assualt missile goodness as well. Oh and through in Roark for PS12... and then swap VI for Swarm on Blount... and replace generic Z-95's with Green Squadron Pilots with Swarm too... D'oh. I don't really see the Rebels needing the CR90 to do anything, I haven't played epic yet but when I do I'm already leaning more toward he GR75 than CR90. I'd spend everything else on AOE or long range hard target destruction.

Yeah I'm guessing Epic, like Apocalypse in another game, is a totally different beast from normal play and not something that would pan out well competitively.

Edit: Before I lost interest I came up with 6 Assault at launching at PS 12 with Focus + Target Lock (or auto hit for Blount) for 283 points. Hardly pratical but that can potentially outright remove a swarm of Defenders... yeah I wouldn't bring Howlrunner into an Epic game or Biggs either. Better to have high health and spread out I'd think (and bring a little AoE to deal with formations).

Edit 2: NVM with Greens w/ Swarm tactics + PtL, I got it up to 10 PS 12 Assault missiles (all TL + Focus except Blount and Cracken) at 299pts... RETARDED.\

Your whole castle comes crumbling down unless you somehow have Ptl + Swarm + Deadeye

Assault missiles are far from an auto-win even without Kagi on the table. Between unreliable shooting (are you also going to put munitions failure?), you opponent's placement (when he sees AM do you think he will keep using his formation?), point blank vulnerability..

What I'm saying still stands. I'd rather take Howlrunner and Jonus then a CR90 at this point. If I see enough missiles on the other side, I will adjust my strategy (of course) to minimize possible damage from Assault Missiles. CR90 players will *not* be able to minimize damage coming from ~20 ships performing primary attack or other attacks that don't need a TL.

A few things... 1) I spent maybe 15 minutes messing around with the idea because I was bored. 2) I'd never run that I'd need 8 A-wings and I'm not buying them. 3) Kagi only works if he's a viable target and since most of the carriers are PS 2-3, he'd need Enhanced scopes. Also if Kagi does gets targeted by 10 Assault missiles he's dead turn 1 and I doubt more than 5 missiles will get used. 4) If you fire off 10 assault misses you're bound to get at least 3 of them to hit. 5) I'd honestly be more worried about killing off my other missile carriers before they get a chance to fire...

TL; DR: It was mostly just a silly thought tangent... but I don't think Epic can or will be balanced for a competitive environment.

Anyways, low cost horde style armies always lose their effectiveness as point limits increase. At low point limits, quantity trumps quality but as point limits increase the balance of power inevitably starts shifting towards quality... Only so many models can actually effect a given target so eventually you need to get more out of the space a model takes up on the table. That's been the case in every wargame I've played and X-wing doesn't appear to be any different.

You mean a Purge Trooper.

Seriously. I think the game scales up quite well, even at 300+ points. Hopefully we'll see some additions to the Epic play format soon (and not just Scum 4x IG2000 lists!)

I think the Internet has ruined that scene forever for me:

That meme's worth it just to imagine the reaction from the Imperial Officer stood behind Vader... brings a whole new meaning to the phrase "Force Choke"
