Imperial HUGE Ships...I'm Calling It.

By Joe Boss Red Seven, in X-Wing

All I'm saying is heat sinks are a thing.

Pfftt, next thing you'll be telling me that having the shield projectors for your entire ship mounted above the bridge in an unprotected and exposed position constitutes a significant design flaw!

The one advantage of the Star Destroyer Bridge design is that it provides a target for everyone to go after- and when dealing with fighters, you can easily focus fire in front of it.

that said it is also a weakness.

Like the really really cool ships.

... and that few minutes of coolness with Obi Wan and Jango Fett fighting and zooming in asteroids, yeah!

I remember reading something in one of the movie "Art of-" books that said the bridge was located at the tip of the spear, so to speak, instead of smack dab in the center of the tower. Dunno if I buy that, although you never see a protruding bridge bubble on the front of the tower, and there is a bubble structure at the very front of the ship.

Either way, with a ship of that size, it's smarter to stick the bridge in the center where it's protected by sheer bulk. But of course, the flying bridge looks cooler...

That's one thing that has really confused me about the star destroyer bridge. I get the impression that big flat-faced thing up top is the "bridge," and yet the interior shots and concept art make the bridge look like it's wedge-shaped, in the manner of the ship.

And A really big van to transport that to games to.

Would be very cool to have something like that mocked up however.

I LOVE THAT!

I know there have been a few talks about my Nebulon B frigate (and by the way, thanks FTS Gecko for providing the information).

Here are some pictures of the Interceptor Frigate:

And the Marauder Corvette (still not painted)

One person has already bought the Nebulon B. He told me he will take pictures of it, so Ill be back in a few days :D

And bytheway. They DO have tokens and cards! I took care of that (but you have to print them yourself)

Now if we could stop leaving open exhaust ports...

That's crazy talk!

All I'm saying is heat sinks are a thing.

Heat sinks don't make heat magically go away, though. They still have to leave it somewhere. "Somewhere" in this case being the inside of the Death Star if you don't want to expel it. I don't know about you, but I'd rather it be empty space than living in a moon-sized oven (I mean, I'd love to see what kind of heatsinks could safely carry away the kind of heat generated when powering a planet destroying weapon without roasting everyone inside).

Star Destroyers weren't the only ships with projectors on the outside. The Falcon, the X-wing, both had projectors on the surface of their craft. Even the CR90 had its projectors at the front of the ship rather than safely nestled deep inside. The Star Destroyer's were just bigger and more obvious because they were also that much stronger.

The Interceptor looks great Mel - was that printed in White/Strong/Flexible? I can't wait to see the Marauder and Nebulon B Frigate painted as well!

Tell me about it. I'm giving serious thought to selling off a load of old tat on eBay just so I can pick up the Corvette-scale Nebulon B...

I'm tempted, too. I just don't know where I'd put the Neb B, or how I'd pay for it. I guess I could sell off a 40k or WHF army...

I hear kidneys sell well.

So do souls... just make sure you don't sell 'em to this guy

Other than the price, I think my main reservation about the fantastic homebrew huge ships is their use. So, you have suggested rulesets that go with these?

I wonder if we might drum up some more interest if we had a new discussion thread once you have stuff painted and there are ready-to-play balanced rulesets. If we don't yet have that ready-to-play balanced ruleset, is there (should there be) a discussion thread on those.

I mention this, because this thread is already on its 38th page and threads that long (I think) make people less likely to wade in.

There's a (pretty huge) pdf packed with homebrew rules for Mel's prints here . I believe he's done cards, dials etc for most of his large ships as well.

Half the fun from custom models though comes from putting together a thematic set of rules yourself, experimenting with balance etc. I like messing around with this page - it's in French, but it's fairly easy to figure out - as it automatically generates your points value (you can add a mark up however based on your pilot skill).

Re: Marauder Corvette:

I love the look of the Marauder ... but there's just something about the cockpit/bridge area that makes it look like it's grossly out of scale compared to the Corellian Corvette and such. I'm sure the math is probably just fine compared to whatever's on Wookieepedia, and scale is squishy when it comes to Star Wars anyway. Maybe if I see one painted up, it'll look more natural.

For some reason, this design gives me nostalgic flashbacks to that old Milton Bradley "Starbird" toy, even though the cockpit's totally different and it doesn't have "wing flanges."

That paint job on the Interceptor Frigate is pretty handsome. It's got just the RIGHT level of "grunge" on it to be noticeable and to break up the flatter areas without being overwhelming.

Hah! Given my s/n, it's more like this guy:

Huge ships are not in that pdf sadly. Wait, Ill post a pdf with the Huge ships (including my Star Destroyer)

My soul isn't worth anything. The expiration date went bad two days ago.

Huh, I think I was once aware of that .pdf, but I entirely forgot about it.

I suppose each of us has their own idea of what half the fun consists of. I also have my creative outlet in terms of creating a mission engine (which I'm currently sleeping on, because I've got a bit too much real work on my hands). I think with creating the rules for ships that I then intend to make use of, I'm a little sheepish. I'd prefer a thoroughly vetted set of rules, than something I came up with off the cuff.
