Imperial HUGE Ships...I'm Calling It.

By Joe Boss Red Seven, in X-Wing

I'm tempted by the CR-90. It's just... I play Imperial, and epic games are still a bit too rare in my life. That said, I really dig the epic game format. I really do like the CR-90 and I love the Transport (which I did get, and those flechette torpedoes have been great!), but the Imperial huge, whatever it will be, will probably be a bigger draw.

Unless it's that ... thing... that Captain Lackwit suggested on page 24. If so, I'll probably just give up on Epic and start dreaming of Armada more.

Hahaha.. I'm a wet blanket for any idea that makes the game unplayable.. I think a ship that size is just that.. nothing will hurt it and only the big ships can bother it...

So here it is.. my big wet blanket, and I toss it over the idea of a ship that size being playable in a game.. the concept.. ludicrous.

Dropping mics on stage. Were you born in a barn?!

The Neb B would indeed need a different maneuvering system than Huge, and Huge is already different. So, they shouldn't do the Neb B because either it would be too big or they would scale it down and it would be too small.

So, let's get back to the original question: What is a realistic Imperial huge?

The top contender seems to remain the Gozanti.

I'm hoping for the Lancer at this point not just because I like it and it comes from the RPG, but because it would make so many people here feel inadequate. The Vigil is cute and all, but it's just not going to happen. So there.

Not that I think this will be made, but I think the existing huge movement system would work just fine. As long as there is some notch in the main pylon's base you could have the huge template work. I'm also amused by the idea you could fly ships between the two main sections of the ship.

It really is a beautiful model... It'll never get made for x-wing, but I'd buy it if I'm wrong...

Did nobody click on the link to the shapeways page that was posted up thread? It's listed at $250.

I think the larger figure got lodged in my head was because this is in White, Strong & Flexible, which, in my mind, means it's like ceiling tile texture. I'm just not very hot-to-trot on that.

I'd be curious to see whether an honest-to-goodness actual production of this model (not just the 3D concept art) would stand up under its own weight. I'm suspecting that it might need some metal rods for the vertical supports and another for the main "spar," at the very least.

As nifty as that is...

So you agree it looks awesome then? Cool.

look at how big it is...

I know, isn't it GLORIOUS? Just look at it! Lookattit!

pic2197078_lg.jpg

GLORIOUS!

.. how do you set that up in an epic scale game map..

Well, basically you set it up on it's flight stands, and plonk it down in your deployment area. Then laugh maniacally.

cause you are only moving 1 forward each turn until you move off the board...

Nah, inertia is a wonderful thing, especially with the huge ship template's banking maneuvers. Six feet is a lot of room to play with. And then of course, there's the Lambda's "all stop" maneuver as well - who says it actually needs to move at all? It just needs to sit there, while you bounce up and down excitedly and scream at your opponent "COME AT ME!!! COME AT ME BRO!!". What a beautiful, beautiful, intimidating, deadly ship.

One way or the other it will happen at Boss' House...

I hope you post pictures for when it does.

These 20 inch'ish ships are totally playable in Epic.

;)

I just had a trio of super sexy oh baby baby baby brand new 30"x60" heavy duty tables delivered yesterday. When I set them up I will have a 5'x71/2' game area.

Now dammit that is prime table action for a Nebulan B with assorted escorts on one side and a Vigil with assorted escorts on the other side.

:D

Hey Joe, I've just seen this thread - mind = blown.

FFG used it in the Age of Rebellion RPG book.

Yeah it IS!

Thanks for sharing!

I have had to start a bookmarks folder just for all of the cool builds our fellow Wingers are doing here and abroad. I figure it is the best way to keep track of good reference since the forum currently does not have sub-cats for build topics and such.

Sure 6 feet is a lot of room, but try turning a 3 foot model on a 3 foot wide space.. isn't gonna happen.. and it needs to move..

Bottom line.. its too large for even epic games.. as much as we all love the look and the idea.. it isn't practical.. and most likely won't happen.. and now we have Armada.. so... there's that..

I just don't understand why people think crazy huge ships should be thrown on the game table..if FFG made that model..not would be 400 bucks.. and this is not warhammer.. we dont need crazy big models..

I can't afford crazy stuff in my games.. heck, I dont even have the Tantive yet.. guarantee I won't be buying a 400 dollar Neb B...

I do like your enthusiasm though Gecks... lol

Would the large ship need to move though? compared to the fighters it'd be pretty slow and sluggish why cant it stay in position as a back drop piece for a mission.

I remember missions in x-wing where the star destroyers would be there immobile but ready to blast you if you dared to get close enough.

It looks great, it is a vital part of the game, it moves or not and that is fine, it never has a reason to turn more than a tad for effect.

:D

I (we) have been typing that out all along, and our boy Oneway has been being an ole Meanie Head all along.

It'll work. We can MAKE it work. ;)

it isn't practical.. and most likely won't happen..

And yet, it already HAS happened - an enterprising young man has made it available to the general public via the medium of 3D printing. Several other X-WIng players have kitbashed or scratchbuilt their own versions.

Maybe we won't see it... but I maintain we're more likely to see a Nebulon B than we are to see a Vigil.

I just don't understand why people think crazy huge ships should be thrown on the game table.

Rule of cool. Look at the picture above again to see what I mean.

we dont need crazy big models.

Speak for yourself, and replace that "we" with an "I".

I cant drop £500 on a ISD2 model kit i don't begrudge people that can, some people just get really sour when people can have things they cant and hate on it in an attempt to spoil their enjoyment.

There you go Brother!

:)

Fluffwise, a pair of Neb-Bs, one on each end of the table, dueling with each other and taking potshots at ships in the middle would be an awesome throwback to the old X vsT mission Malevolent vs Endevour

...or a Nebulon B and TIE swarm on one side, a Corvette, Transport and rebel escort ships on the other for that matter...

If it's just a static immovable object.. might as well be another cardboard token..

Look.. sorry you guys disagree.. but you need to look at this through the glasses of reality.. the model would be too large and too expensive... 2 things that will never work in this game...

And as I have said from the beginning.. just my opinion, and you are not required to share it.. but I do expect people to think logically and with some semblance of reaeon.. not the fan boy desire for all the cool stuff.. if it won't work in the game it doesn't belong in the game.. and that is exactly what a friggin too large ship would be...

Just how I see it, butnitnis amusing that so many seem to think that just cause they want it FFG will be making it..

And as for the idea that one person made a shapeways model... well.. take some pics when you buy that I'd love to see it... but at 250.. I won't be getting one.

Your opinion has been duly noted oneway, and filed away in the big, green, plastic bag-lined filing cabinet marked "irrelevant".

Imperial huge ships are an inevitability, and FFG continuing to develop the Epic scale format is an inevitability. If you personally aren't interested or don't want to participate in either, that's entirely up to you and no-one's forcing you to - but there's plenty of people who do want to see FFG push the boundaries of what people think is possible with X-Wing, and give us the iconic ships the game deserves.
