Sinister concept for a build: TacticiHan

By Felswrath69, in X-Wing

Very tricksy build I flew against last week that got me really worried, and definitely something I hadn't considered.

It was:

Han - Marksmanship, Gunner, Tactician (proxied)

Blue Squadron Pilot x2

Here's how it worked: Han moved into range 2 on the initial salvo. He attacks with marksmanship. He rerolls to make his attack WORSE and never activates marksmanship. I easily defend. I receive a stress (tactician). Han reattacks with gunner, rerolls with his ability, activates marksmanship and hits me 3 times. I defend (and take three hits). I receive ANOTHER stress. The Bs both attack the same guy stripping 4-5 more damage. End of the round, that guy (a Firespray) has TWO stress tokens on him, no shields and something like 3-4 damage.

How ended up beating the list: with two stress you're not going to take actions for at least two more rounds. Moving the predictable 1-2 to clear one of them wasn't cutting it. I hard three turned outta there trying to get the heck away from Han. I took the rest of my guys and stayed outside of range two from Han and his firing arc. I concentrated all my firepower on the Bs then tipped the scales 3v1 on Han.

That initial salvo, however, struck fear in my heart that it was 'going to be a real short trip' to use a Han quote. Just wanted to share because it was a tactic I had never heard or seen before.

You're going to start seeing similar things a lot with tactician, Mara jade, and the Jam action. Plan accordingly.

Indeed - took me by surprise intentionally missing a shot - but that's the right move with Han. You can see FFG trying to make stress a major part of the new meta as a way to help control phantoms and the like. Anyway, I thought it a very interesting take on tactician.

If you intend to miss with your first attack, predator is better than Han.

All "miss with the first attack" builds require gunner.

To be fair, this build also relies on Han's reroll being worse than his initial roll, and on you defending what is probably going to be at least one damage.

The stress builds are going to appear, so being reliant upon actions will be trickier. That being said, stress only goes so far and this game is ultimately about dealing damage and killing off ships, so any build focused upon weakening and not killing is inherently flawed to some degree. There are many things I fear more than receiving 1-2 stress tokens.

Certainly. It didn't turn out too badly, it was just the first time I had more than one stress on a ship and I wasn't prepared for the new cards / tactics. Like I said, I secured the win luckily, but it could certainly be devastating.

If han's reroll is good and better than the first, no biggie, you deal damage then and give out one stress.

Stress builds will be interesting. They won't always be effective with new guys like Farlander. Ibtisim, Tyco, and Fel also aren't that concerned. The new Wingman EPT will also be making many appearances I would assume. It will be fun trying to make lists that can handle these situations.

The solution in this case is just to out-maneuver the Falcon. The biggest advantage of a turret ship is the ability to fly defensively without worrying about which direction your primary arc is pointing, trying to use abilities that are restricted to your primary arc throws away that advantage. So I think lists like this are going to be an irrelevant gimmick: scary on paper, but in real games you're better off just killing them instead of screwing around with stress.

This sounds like the best build ever. This guy must be a genius ;-)

It was a fun game, you definitely played it well!

Seems like it might be a good way to neutralize a Vader.
